Helen Seifert Obituary

Helen T. Seifert passed away on January 27, 2013 at the age of 89, just short of her 90th birthday. Helen was born on January 29, 1923 in Paisley, Scotland. As a young girl, Helen emigrated to Detroit, Michigan with her parents and sister. Helen was married to Harvey Zimmerman, and they were blessed with two children, Diane, born in 1946 and Richard, born in 1951. Harvey died in 1966. Helen married George J. Seifert on July 5, 1969. With her marriage to George, Helen became step mother to George's sons, David and Mark Seifert. George predeceased her after 40 years of marriage in 2009. Helen's beloved daughter, Diane (John) Kohler, predeceased her in 1989. Helen is survived by her son, Richard Zimmerman (Trudi Michel) and her sister, Margaret Fischer. She is also survived by step sons, David (Lavonne) Seifert, of Overland Park, Kansas, and Mark (Brigid) Seifert of Phoenix, Arizona. Helen has six grandchildren: Jill (Gerard) Vernes, Jeffrey Kohler, Jennifer (Doug) Hocrath, Anne Seifert, Laura Seifert, Andrew Zimmerman and Kristin Zimmerman, all of whom adored their grandmother. Helen is also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Helen lived in the Detroit area for most of her life. She was a constant loving support and traveling companion to her husband, George Seifert. Helen and George loved to travel by car and they logged many miles visiting children and grandchildren and finding all of the "back roads" that made those trips so memorable and enjoyable for them. She was a faithful member of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Madison Heights, Michigan. Helen gave back to her community in Madison Heights, and volunteered at her local elementary school reading to children. She also volunteered at Open Hand food bank for many years. Helen moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in May 2005 to be closer to family members. She immediately made friends with all of the neighbors, young and old, near her new home. George and Helen became members of Ascension Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs in 2005. Helen's family truly appreciates all of the love and support of the Ascension Church family during her time in Colorado Springs. A memorial service will be held on February 8, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2505 North Circle Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909. In lieu of flowers, Helen's family asks that donations be made to Ascension Lutheran Church.
