Howard Carl Dutzi died on June 17, 2022, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He was born to Hilda Heim Dutzi and Ludwig Otto Dutzi on February 26, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Lease) Dutzi; and his sister, Jean Dutzi (Patrick) McMahon of St. Charles, Illinois; nieces, Colleen McMahon (Nikolai) Miczek, Elizabeth Dutzi (Jason) Starzec; and nephews, Robert K. (Laura) Dutzi, Michael P McMahon, Timothy (Jennifer) McMahon, James Paul Lease, Joseph T. Lease, and John D. (Mary) Lease. There also are numerous grand nephews and nieces.
Howard was preceded in death by his brother, Robert G. Dutzi; and sister-in law Christine of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; and his brothers-in-law, D. James Lease and Paul R. Lease.
Howard earned a Masters of Science degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Illinois. He worked for the engineering firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and was assigned to do design work for the Air Force Academy. He decided to move permanently to Colorado and in 1961 founded his own firm, Howard C. Dutzi and Associates, now HCDA Engineering.
In retirement Howard pursued his interest in drawing and won many awards. Howard and his wife traveled and camped throughout the world. Their travels are reflected in his many paintings.

I worked with Howard 1 year in the 1960's. I learned a lot and I remember him as an exceptional person. Howard, Gene, Julia and I.

Howard was one of my father's long-time friends. My father died about 16 months before Howard. I remember an early vacation to Colorado Springs, before Howard was married to Ruth. I was about 5 and I was fascinated by this man who lived by himself and took care of himself. He would get up early and I would hear him and patter around after him asking all sorts of questions. He was kind and gifted.

Howard was part of a pioneer movement to gather pastel artists here in Southern Colorado. He was an encouraging instructor, I learned a lot in his pastel art class. He was a gifted artist and remains in our lives with his many beautiful paintings.
