Lieutenant Colonel Jack C. Runyan

Jack Runyan Obituary

Jack C. (Happy/Smilin Jack) Runyan, loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, and great friend and mentor, died peacefully on December 2, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jack is survived by his wife Pat (Heisig), daughters, Susan (Tom) Walker, Terri Runyan, and Babbi (Micky) MacKenzie, and two sons, Rick (Char) Runyan and Steve (Lisa) Runyan, 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Jack was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on August 25, 1932, the second child of Louise and Raymond Runyan. His family later moved to Indiana where Jack grew up, graduating from Lawrenceburg High School where he starred in basketball, football and baseball. He went on to Purdue University and played both baseball and basketball there, eventually choosing basketball as his sporting focus along with his mechanical engineering studies and Air Force ROTC. Upon graduating from Purdue, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force on September 30, 1954, with his first assignment at Truax Field in Madison, WI, where he met his future wife, Pat Heisig. They were married on April 16, 1955. He then entered Undergraduate Pilot Training, became a Fighter Pilot and protected his country flying out of the United States, Iceland, Taiwan and the Philippines and combat missions out of South Vietnam and Thailand. During his service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Readiness Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. The pinnacle of his Air Force career assignments was as an Air Officer Commanding at the Air Force Academy. He made a huge difference in the lives of those he led teaching them, by example, what it meant to be Air Force Officers and husbands. Mentoring and teaching the young men there solidified his choice for a second career. Jack retired from the Air Force on June 30, 1975. His second career was as a teacher, coach and administrator in School District 20, touching the lives of so very many young men and women in both careers. The highlights of Jack's life were the births of their five children, Susan, Terri, Rick, Babbi and Steve who went on to marry and bless Jack and Pat with thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren who have given them immeasurable joy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jack's name to "Build as One", Saint Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 8955 Scarborough Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80920, where he was a member from its inception. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec 6, 9 AM at Saint Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church followed by a Memorial Mass at 10 AM. Jack will be buried with Military Honors and pride for the way he served and loved God, his family and his country 2:30 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO.

Jack (Mr. Runyan) played a significant role in my success at Liberty High School. I moved to Colorado Springs when I was a junior in high school, which could have been a distressing time to move in an adolescent's life. Jack encouraged me to run for student council, persuaded me to try out for the dance team (POMS) and he even taught me pre-calculus one-on-one when the class wasn't offered during my schedule. Jack had a passionate and beautiful spirit that inspired all the lives he touched. I will treasure recent memories when reconnecting with him and Pat in 2008 & 2009 when planning our 20 year Liberty High School. I am so very grateful and honored to have had such a wonderful and inspiring gentleman as a devoted influence in my life. To the Runyan family, my thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this heartfelt time. He will never be forgotten!

Coach Runyan was my basketball coach at Liberty High School. He was so fun, inspirational, and an all around great person. I will never forget the trips to Wyoming for camp with him, he always was so excited and new how to make everyone laugh! My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He will always be remembered!

My condolences to the Runyan family. I was fortunate enough to have Mr Runyan for math at Air Academy Junior High in the early '80's. He was a wonderful teacher and great man who touched so many lives. He actually made geometry fun! We all loved him. God bless your family!

I had Mr. Runyon as a teacher at Air Academy Jr. High. We all loved him! What I remember most is him teaching us how to solve geometry problems. He set up this chart and it said "garbage in" and "garbage out" :) As kid I just adored him and as an adult I can look back and see what an amazing man he was. Rest in peace Mr. Runyon and my deepest sympathy to the family.

To the Runyan Family -
For all the Conboy's who came in contact with Jack either on the social standpoint or being coached by him we want to let you know we all sorrowed by his passing. For me Jack will always be remembered for his smile and my summer of baseball when I played for him on our "Expo's" legion B team, which spawned the name we all called him "Coach Poos - for Expooos' " as he called us... He has bettered the lives of many, and will be missed!!

What a contagious smile and huge heart for everyone. How could you not smile when he entered the room. Coach Runyan always had the kids best interest in the front of his mind. Our girls learned a lot about their sport as well as how to work together as a team. He and Steven shared many a military tale:-) Rest in peace, may the family be comforted with his memories and his positive effect in other's lives. He's leaving this world a better place than he found it!

Col/Mr.Runyan was the best! Anyone who could teach math at Air Academy Junior High in the late 70's had the nerves of steel, 'the patience of Job' and the intellect Einstein. He was a good man! He'll be missed-

I feel very fortunate to have had Mr. Runyan for geometry at Rampart. As I watch my own daughter now struggle with math I have recalled fondly how patient and determined Mr. Runyon was to see that I didn't give up on new concepts. . He was a great teacher and a wonderful gentleman. My sympathy to the family.

What a handsome guy!

I am so very honored and grateful to have had his energetic, strong, and loving influence in my life. To The Runyan Family---I taught with Jack at Liberty and I never knew a more universally respected person. I got to know Jack well when he was the athletic director and I was the LHS hockey coach. He treated me with respect, had high expectations and was a true mentor, leader and friend. He always had a positive attitude and his trademark smile. I am so lucky to have known Jack. May God grant you peace during this difficult time. God Bless!

Dear Pat and Family,
Jack was indeed a wonderful role model. He partly inspired me to become a teacher and a coach. I think of him often and remember fondly our practices and games. His huge smile and his comment that he was the most handsome always brought a smile to my face. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
