James "Mac" McCoy was born on July 27, 1947, in Mishawaka, Indiana, the only child to Robert and Winifred McCoy, where he lived until he graduated from high school.
James studied at Indiana University in Bloomington before attending IU Medical School in Indianapolis. He met nursing student Myra Stoppenhagen, and they married in 1971 and devoted the next 52 years of their lives to each other. Through his service in the Army Medical Corps, they lived in Germany and at other U.S. posts, having the opportunity to enjoy other cultures and people. After 15 years in the Army, Mac finished at Ft. Carson and decided to open his private dermatology practice in downtown Colorado Springs, where he enjoyed caring for and connecting with his numerous patients for almost 30 dedicated years. Throughout his career, Dr. McCoy partnered with area dermatologists to provide free skin cancer screening for the community.
During childhood, Mac developed a love for Scouting, marching and concert band, and journalism. Those close to him over the years knew his enjoyment of reading, golfing, playing word games, listening to music, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends, especially in the mountains. Over the past 40 years, his Colorado Springs community became like family.
Mac completed his battle with cancer and died peacefully at home on August 14, 2023, shortly after his 76th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Myra, two children, Sarah (Keith) Hobart and David (Beth) McCoy, and three grandchildren, Caleb and Anna Hobart and Zachary McCoy. A celebration of life will be held at 1pm on October 20th at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mac's memory to First Presbyterian Church's Get Set Preschool Program or Deacon Fund or the local organization of your choice.
