Joanne Zerbe Steeves, 93, a native Coloradan and long-time resident of Colorado Springs, spent her childhood in Manitou Springs. She was predeceased by her brother Lawrence, her parents Donald and Irene Zerbe, and her former husband, Winthorp (Buddy) Steeves III.
Joanne was a life-long learner, earning a bachelor's degree from Colorado College, graduate degrees from the University of Colorado, and regularly attending classes on subjects that interested her. Many saw her as a renaissance woman, interested in many topics to include the fine arts, music, nature and sciences. For some years she served as a docent at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an organization for teachers. It was an honor for her to be a member and it was also a source of pleasure and many dear friends. She loved the outdoors here in Colorado and was an avid hiker well into old age.
For 45 years she taught and served as an administrator in the Fountain-Fort Carson School District. She is fondly remembered by those with whom she worked. After formally retiring she continued to help her former teaching associates by serving as a long-term substitute in the Fountain schools.
In recent years, Joanne lived in Southern California, near her son Brent, his wife Char, and family who cared for her with great love and patience. Joanne is survived by her sons, Brent Steeves, Craig (Lawrence) Steeves, and grandson, Austin Cartwright. Joanne requested that in her memory, we make a donation of school supplies to a local school where it would make a difference. A future celebration of life is planned.
