Mark Hays Obituary

Mark Edward Hays passed away February 24, 2016 in Colorado Springs. Mark is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kathy Hays; brothers Jack (Janice) and Keith (Judy) and nephew Andrew (Chanthy) Hays. Mark was born February 2, 1949 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of John and Beverly (Rydeen) Hays.

Mark graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 1967 where he was on the National Honor Society and Student Council and played five sports including three years of hockey and captain of the team in his senior year. Mark graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1971 where he received a Professional Degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, of Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary society, and of the Press Club for the Oredigger school newspaper.

After graduation, Mark started his career in the oil and gas industry at Plateau Natural Gas in Colorado Springs. Mark and Kathy married in 1978. Through numerous company consolidations, Mark lived and worked in Omaha, Wichita and Denver, eventually moving to Houston to work at Enron Headquarters where he was Director for Enron Capital & Trade Resources Corp. Mark retired in 1999 and returned to Colorado Springs.

Since then Mark and Kathy have enjoyed their regular outings in various mountain towns of Colorado and their get-togethers with their close friends "The Buffaloes". Mark was a member of The Hendersons and the Lunch Bunch (regular weekly lunches with his two brothers and five other best friends) and had been a member of the Broadmoor Golf Club and the El Paso Club. Mark was a long-time volunteer at the American Numismatic Association here in Colorado Springs.

In his personal life, Mark will be remembered as a steady friend, a person with a dry sense of humor and sharp wit, and a guy who was "structured, punctual and set-in-his ways". Mark was fondly known as "Fast Eddie" to his friends and family, a nickname that originated from his senior year as captain of the Indians hockey team when Mark played both offense and defense; and legend has it that between periods he also drove the Zamboni.

Services will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Chapel of Our Savior Episcopal Church, 4th and Polo, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Not a lot more to say about one of my oldest friends. I think about him regularly, especially on February 24th. Many years of joy did I get out of Fast Eddie. I will cherish his friendship forever. I always seem to think about Eddie during stressful times in my life. We were so close and he always had an answer to my issues. What a great person. Always in my thoughts and prayers.

Mark was a student at Cheyenne Mountain High School while I was Director of Athletics. He was a very good
student, an accomplished High School athlete, and a young gentleman. I considered him a good friend.

Fast Eddie was a great guy who I knew in high school. I remember him as a good athlete, super smart, with a great wit, and a good friend to my boyfriend at the time, Ed Murphy. We often double dated and had lots of fun together. I lost touch with mark after high school but was not surprised to learn how successful hes been professionally and personally. Mark Hays, a special guy who was loved by many and who continues to be missed by all.

I will miss him every Sunday morning. He sat in the back pew at church, and I always looked to see if he was there. Peace be with you, Mark.

Mark was great friend to me and an excellent friend and volunteer to the ANA. His dedication and knowledge are sorely missed.

From Doug Heyliger

I am a newer member of the 'Lunch Bunch', which includes current members, Jack & Keith, Rob Middleton, Skip Loo, Peter Slothower. We saw Mark virtually every week and he was founding member, roughly 13 years ago.

We played hockey together in junior & senior high school, which was the start our friendship.

Mark also went by the nickname, 'Commando', one of three, which included my (late) twin brother, Don and myself. We were back in Colorado Springs from college, for the summer. We were going to meet up with Renny Borchert, just to give you an idea of who the cast of the other players might have been.

The Commandos were formed at College Days, in Ft. Collins, the spring of 1968. Back then, College Days was a rare (not mention dangerous) experience, even for that time it seemed.

There are so many 'back stories' about that weekend, which started on Friday, with Don and I picking up Anne Peterson in Greeley on the way. I recall her saying, after getting in the car, her sorority sisters were mad because none of them had dates and she had two - with twins no less! Too funny at the time.

It ended on Sunday (way too early) morning, with Don waking up Mark and me, sleeping in the car on the street! He was ready to go home! If he hadn't been a new, fellow Commando...:)

I won't write any more about it now, but if you want to hear 'the rest of the story', we can talk about at the reception, or I may write some more later. And no clue where Anne was or how she got home.

Now, for those of you who have read this, may I suggest you consider writing your own favorite story about Mark?

I was hesitant at first to write anything, but I am glad I did.

How do you feel?

Best, Doug

A really all around good guy, I met when Peoples Natural Gas bought out Plateau Natural Gas in 972. I always enjoyed his wit and smile. He will be sorely missed and my prayers are with Kathy and the rest of his family. God Bless!

The days will never be as bright with the untimely passing of my longtime friend, Mark, aka Mr. Fast, aka Fast Eddie. His humor was contagious and his credentials fully document his intellect in the natural gas industry.

March 2, 2016

I met Mark and some other Cheyenne graduates in 1967 when we were working at the Cheyenne Mt. Zoo. A summer job couldn't have been more fun.

We spent time together through our college years and until his job required him to ,relocate.

Upon retiring Mark renewed our friendship, which lasted until his untimely passing. A better friend could not be had. I'll miss you Mark,
