Olga Pratt Obituary

January 29, 1911 - June 18, 2008. Olga Pratt was a part of the "greatest generation". She grew up during the Great Depression, began her nursing career during World War II, and later went on to make important contributions to establish the standards for long-term care of the elderly and the disabled. Like others of her generation, Olga modeled a life of hard work, sacrifice, and personal responsibility for her family, her employees, her professional associates, and countless others. Olga was born to Charles and Bess Greenley in Tarkio, Missouri, on January 29, 1911. While still a young girl, her family moved to Elizabeth, Colorado. After graduation from high school, she moved to Colorado Springs determined to create a career for herself in the field of nursing. She received her RN from the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. She took great pride in her 50 years as an RN and her 36 years as the owner and administrator of Norton's Healthcare Facility and Kar-Mor Nursing Home. In addition to being an important "pioneer" in developing the field of long-term care, Olga actively participated in all community endeavors focusing on improving the care of our community's elders. She was a member of the community task force that created the senior support services of Silver Key. Her name suggestion "silver key" was selected because it embodied the mission of the new organization… providing help to those with silver hair….offering a key to open new doors of community support and caring. Among her other contributions, Olga was instrumental in the establishment of the first nurse-aide training and certification program offered by El Paso Community College, now Pikes Peak Community College. She is survived by her four children: Dan Norton, Penny (Craig) Whitney, Pat (Mike) Mudd, and Sandy (David) Shakes. Her legacy of love is continued in her eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Please join family, friends, and neighbors in the celebration of a remarkable woman's life led by Chaplain Tom Stella, Evercare Hospice. Thursday, July 10 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm 1700 North Cascade Ave Home of Craig and Penny Whitney In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Soroptimist Olga Pratt Nursing Scholarship Fund, 2327 Condor St., CS 80909 or the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

For some reason this morning I thought about Mrs. Pratt and decided to take a look in the Gazette. I worked for her for 8 years and she will always (in my mind) be known as "The Boss". She had high standards and expected you to live to up to them. However, she was kind and generous and always had a job for folks who needed a hand up. I am truly sorry to hear of her passing and my deepest sympathies are extended to her family.

Mrs. Pratt was a wonderful and fun in her own way--you would have to run after her becauseshe would come flying through the back door by the kitchen at norton,s and she wld be explaining to you what had to be done, if you wnted to hear you wld have to run after her down the hallway to her office. Mrs. Pratt helped me get prepared for nursing school and would have me do some typing for her which i am sure she had to go back and correct, but she never said one word about the mistakes---- she was a humerous lady in her own way and in my young age I sometimes would run and take cover when mrs pratt and mrs beals would exhange words...

I am sorry to hear that Mrs. Pratt passed. I met Mrs. Pratt through Lolita Creech back in the 1980"s. I did housecleaning for Mrs. Creech & Mrs. Pratt hired me to clean her home also. I then helped her daughter Penny in her home, on a few occasions. I think it is great that Mrs. Pratt contributed so much to Colorado Springs. There are many of us who will never forget her. May God Bless you all.
