Peggy Parr Obituary

Peggy Parr (87) lived life on her own terms. She travelled the world solo, ran a landscape architecture firm in southern California after studying at Cornell, UCLA and UC Berkeley, climbed the higher peaks, married late and had four children in her 40s, joined El Paso County Search and Rescue in her mid-fifties, and then wrote a book about her experiences on the team. Runs to the grocery store were interrupted with Search and Rescue beepers. Backpacking trips started when her children were five, four, three, and one. PTA meetings turned into stand-up comedy routines when she was president. Spending time with Peggy Parr was never dull. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, James Parr, and her three brothers, Quentin, Sully, and Jerry Sullivan. She is survived by four children: Jacqueline of Fanwood, NJ; James of Denver, CO; Terence of San Francisco, CA; and Josephine of New York, New York. She had seven grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters in law, Jeanne Brown of San Diego, CA and Katherine Sullivan of Santa Barabara, CA. She will also be missed by long-time family friend, Peggy Rizzo, who was her companion and caregiver during the last years of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Barr Camp on Pikes Peak in her name. www.barrcamp.com A memorial service will be held this summer on Pikes Peak. If you would like to be notified about the service, please send an email to [email protected].

Peggy Parr was an inspiration to me. We were in EPCSAR together. I was 28, fit, and Peggy ran circles around most of us! She had a lovely sense of humor. I still have her book. I, for one, will never forget her! What an amazing life she carved out for herself!

My dad was a member of the SAR team she was on in Colorado Springs. I was 14, in 1987, when I joined the Explorer SAR team associated with El Paso County Search and Rescue. Peggy was still on the team at the time, and still hiking circles around team members a third her age. She was, and still is one of the coolest people I've ever known, and an inspiration, always. I actually went on to become a Corpsman, and got high angle rescue certified while I was in the military, and later was a paramedic. I spent a total of 22 years in EMS, always admiring her.

I just read Peggy's book again. I served with her for 2 years in EPCSAR. I was curious about when she died. Peggy was one of a kind, a sheer delight!
My belated condolences to you all.

I am sitting in my kitchen what seems to be a million miles from the mountains and this email instantly brought back a flood of warm memories. One of the most poignant from when we had planned a hike on Elk park :"If we wait for the nice weather we'll never get anything done". Chastened, I went with her and had one of the best hikes of my life. Miss you Peggy.

I met Peggy over 20 years ago on Pikes Peak during one of her wonderful and entertaining alpine tundra hikes. I'm a park ranger on Pikes Peak and learned a wealth of knowledge from Peggy. Thank you friend!

I am mother to Ginny and John Brown who went to Fountain Valley when you all were there. I had also hiked with Peggy. What a spirit she was. What a spirit she leaves behind. Best to you and your family. Ann Brown

Peggy was a role model for me starting in my teens and 20's. I would listen to every detail when she would identify the alpine flowers on Pikes Peak (on our knees with magnifying glasses) or traipsing off-trail in search of the rare lady slipper orchids. Peggy thank you for your energy, spirit and gift of appreciation for our natural world. I now lead hike/bike tours and remind my guests to be silent, be present, and to treasure the beauty of our world.

Peggy was truly an amazing one-of-a-kind individual. We are blessed that we were able to know her. As our family meets the challenge of the Pike's Peak Ascent this year, we will especially hold her memories dear... and it sounds like we need to take ice cream to the top! Peggy, you were an awesome inspiration to us all... an incredible role model.

I am one of the fortunate people to have hiked beautiful foothills and trails with Peggy. She was truly an inspiration.
The last time I saw her slowly walking down Cheyenne Rd near my home, she did not recognize me but told me to keep on hiking.
She was a gift to all of us whose lives she touched!

To Peggy's family, including Peggy Rizo, I had the pleasure of not only growing up with you kids but also in working with Peggy at the Broadmoor Greenhouses some years ago. She was a kick to work with and I adored her with all my heart. She was always there with advice and a spirited laugh that I think of often and will never forget. And talk about a worker! She'd work circles around younger people! What a woman she was. I'm a better person to have known and loved her. God's perenniel garden will be the best ever now!! Fondly, Karen Acker (Fry)

To Peggy's family:
I met Peggy through search and rescue. She was my first contact with the team and I never forgot her advice to be among the first to arrive at trainings (to have the privilege of getting the more challenging assignment)or the real challenge of having to keep up with her on the trail. She is the most memorable person I have ever met.May your memories bring you comfort.

It was Peggy who I credit with my becoming a hiker as well as a ski-bum! She ran a great hiking program for the YMCA way back in the 70s, and I was privileged to be a part of that women's hiking group - those were the best of times (even though Peggy tried to keep us from talking so we could appreciate the sounds of nature!)

To Peggy's Family. I was in SAR with Peggy and she was an inspiration and good friend. My wife and I ran the youth segment of SAR and she was always willing to give myself and the youth a few pointers on the fine arts of searching and tracking. I have a signed copy of her book which I have always cherished. Her jokes were also a fine point in her life. God bless
