Richard Gerard Hill, 80, died peacefully April 8. A 50-year resident of Colorado Springs, he was known for his magic touch with things of the Earth, where his gardens were bountiful. When warm weather appeared around April, there was a noticeable spring in his step.
Along with the garden, he loved making green chili from scratch, a passion he shared with his son, Sean, when the two of them took command of the kitchen.
Along with gardening and cooking, he loved watching national golf tournaments on television, a passion he picked up from his late father.
At least three times a year, he tried to beat the odds in Las Vegas. At times, he didn't even mind losing a bit, so long as it involved the thrill of the chase.
Above all, Richard Hill loved his family and took delight in his grandsons in Nevada, Colin and Cedar, whom he supplied with trucks, drones and Legos.
Mr. Hill served in the U.S. Navy and was on board the USS Talladega in Japan during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. After two years in the Navy, he returned to Colorado where he earned a degree in accounting from Denver University. He worked in the corporate world until he retired to work as a self-employed tax accountant.
Mr. Hill died of heart complications and dementia in a nursing home in Reno, Nev.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Adrelia Hill and is survived by his sons, Sean Hill (Sarah Gobbs Hill) of Reno, Nev.; Todd (Melissa) Hill of San Diego, Ca.; his daughter, Cindy Dunn (Wade) of Killeen, Texas; his sister Norma (Danny) Vice, of Washington state; four grandchildren and three great granddaughters. Services are pending in Reno.
