Robert Horn Obituary

Robert "Bob" Millard Horn went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 8, 2010 at the age of 88. He was born May 19, 1921 in Rathbun, Iowa, to Matthew and Agnes Horn. As a boy, Bob's family moved to Waukee, Iowa, where he spent his school years. Bob was both a good student and athlete. He excelled in basketball and baseball, earning a scholarship to Iowa State University and a contract offer to join the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He turned down these opportunities to work at the Iowa State Capitol in the State Mining Office, a decision that had a lifetime impact as it was in the halls of the statehouse that Bob met the love of his life, his soul mate, and his surviving wife of 66 years, Betty Kay Slocum. Their marriage of 66 years was truly an example of faith, commitment, and faithfulness. Bob was one of the "Greatest Generation," a veteran who left his family to serve overseas in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On leaving the service, Bob began a lifetime career in sales, first in Iowa and then Colorado where he was involved in the tire business for many years before entering real estate. He maintained a real estate broker's license into his eighties and ran his own business, R.M.H. Realty until 2005. In addition to his career, Bob was an active member of the Colorado Springs community. A founding member of Northeast Bible Chapel, Bob was an active leader in the church for over fifty years. He also coached and sponsored Young America League baseball teams and had a commitment to assisting individuals through the work of the Alcoholics Anonymous organization. Many sought Bob out for his godly wisdom and counsel. Beyond all of this, the highlight of Bob's life was his family. In addition to his beloved Betty, Bob is survived by three children: Linda Campbell and her husband Pat, of Ridgefield, Washington; Mark Horn and his wife, Lynn, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Elayne Wieker and her husband, Larry, of Colorado Springs. He was affectionately known as "Grampy" and "Bobby" by his eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family is Bob's legacy - they are his voice and his message to the future. He is also survived by his brother, Bill Horn of Wichita, Kansas, and his sister, Myrna Baird of Des Moines, Iowa. Indeed, Bob's life preached a sermon of loving concern for others. For this reason, asks that memorial gifts be directed to the Ecumenical Social Ministries, 201 North Weber, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 The family will gather for visitation with friends on Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. A private burial on Thursday morning will be followed by a 11:00 a.m. memorial service at Northeast Bible Chapel, 1722 McArthur Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80909

Mr. and Mrs. Horn. Words cannot express how deeply sorry I am for your loss. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Someone shared with me, whenever I lost my precious father, that I had been given a "gift". I had a very hard time understanding that at the moment. But I soon came to understand....I had been given the gift of "time" with my father....time to prepare...time to pray with him...time to say all the things I needed to say before letting him go home. My prayer for you this morning is that you draw upon those memories of your father and all of the special "times" you had with him. With much love....

Dear Betty and Family,

I am so sorry I did not get your message.
I might have been able to be there.
I love what Sherri Wright just wrote. She always felt God's presence around Bob. Praise the Lord, I could not have said it any better.
Back in 1980 when I lived in the Springs, my sister was out for a visit and after we visited Bob in his real estate office, my sister said to me - and I quote, "I feel like I have just been talking to Jesus"
What a compliment. Bob was so full of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Any time I ever mentioned Bob, my x wife, Mary, would always immediately respond with: "He is such a lovely man" She was so right.
I pray that Bob's wishes that the Lord Jesus be glorified at his service will be more than evident. Even in his death, Bob will again be a witness for the Love of Our Lord. I also pray Bob's service will be a wonderful tribute to Bob and a great comfort to Betty and all the family.
I will greatly miss such a fine Christian friend, but I can't wait to see him in his new glorified body!!! Praise the Lord.
Love and prayers

I've known Bob & Betty Horn most of my adult life. He was such a testament to our Christian faith. I always felt God's presence around Bob. He and my dad were great friends and now they are both with our Lord and Savior.

Although he will be greatly missed here on earth, he is free of all the physical problems and pains.

My prayers are with Betty and the family in their loss of her husband, their father, and grandfather.

It was such a privilege to be considered one of Bob's friends.
