Samuel Carson "Sam" Dunn

Samuel Dunn Obituary

Samuel (Sam) Carson Dunn, age 93, passed away at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 2, 2006. The son of Irish immigrants, he was born on December 22, 1913, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1923, the family moved to Colorado Springs and resided at 1 Broadmoor Avenue. Sam graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 1931. He attended Colorado College for the next three years then left school to help support his family. One of his jobs was driving tourists up Pikes Peak. He would drive pretty fast going up, knowing full well someone in the group would offer him additional money if he would drive slow going down. He joined C.C.C. and learned Surveying. His surveying skills took him to Hawaii, and then to Johnston Island, in the South Pacific where he helped build an air strip. Upon completion of his job there, he returned to Colorado Springs, joined the Air Force, and was stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He married (Alice) Jane Hoyt in 1943. He became an airplane mechanic and was stationed in England during World War II. While stationed in England he was able to go to Ireland and visit relatives. After the war was over he came back to Colorado Springs, went back to Colorado College and graduated in 1948. Sam and Jane moved to Honolulu where Sam worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1985. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, a daughter Sherri Dunn Sisson, one granddaughter Lee. One grandson Sam, and his brother Thomas Dunn of Colorado Springs.
