Sandra Mae "Sandy" Patchell, 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Cascade, Colorado, on September 20, 2025. A devoted wife, mother, colleague, and neighbor, Sandy will be remembered for her unwavering support of others and love of the outdoors.
Born on January 3, 1936, in DuBois, Pennsylvania, Sandy was the daughter of H. Don and Dora Hoover. She married the love of her life, Robert Patchell, and together they shared more than 71 years of marriage, a partnership marked by deep affection, shared service, and pride in their family. Sandy was a loving mother to her daughters and a caring, steadfast companion to Robert.
Professionally, Sandy served as office manager for The Prudential Insurance Company of America for 28 years, where she was known for her reliability, and willingness to lend a helping hand to coworkers. Her commitment to community ran just as deep. A longtime member of the Church in the Wildwood, she sang in the choir and rang in the bell choir. In recognition of their dedication, a hall at the church was named in honor of Sandra and Robert. Together, they also served on the board of the Sally Bush building, helping shepherd its restoration to former glory. Sandy volunteered widely, including with Friends of the Library, the Community Cupboard, and the Cascade Community Park.
An avid runner, Sandy competed in—and often won—age-group events such as the Garden of the Gods 10 Mile, the Bolder Boulder, and the Pikes Peak Marathon. She cherished time outdoors, fondly calling Pikes Peak "her mountain." She cheered on the Broncos and the Rockies and enjoyed traveling, including a memorable trip to Israel to visit Tel Aviv and the Wailing Wall. Sandy dreamed of being a dancer as a child and enjoyed playing her baby grand piano.
Above all, Sandy was a loving, caring, and supportive wife and mother—ever ready to extend a helping hand. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert who passed away just four months ago. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Bornholdt and Dawn Viola along with six grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren.
A joint celebration of life for Sandy and Robert will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to one of the organizations that she was passionately supportive of: The Cascade Volunteer Fire Department, 8015 Severy Rd, Cascade, CO 80809 where Robert was the chief and Sandra was a member of the axillary OR the Church in the Wildwood, 10585 Ute Pass Ave, Green Mountain Falls, CO 80819
