Sandy, born Sandra Jean Smith, passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by family on January 11, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the age of 63. She was born on October 4, 1961, in Northfield, Minnesota, and is survived by her parents, James and Leona, her sister, Sheila, and brother-in-law, Midge, as well as her niece, Kerianne, and nephew, Brandon. She was preceded in death by her sister, Suzanne ("Sue") Smith, and dear friend Marie Sullivan.
A lifelong science educator, Sandy was dedicated to fostering curiosity and discovery in her students, fellow teachers, friends and family. She was highly decorated, receiving numerous awards and grants for her contributions to science education and her community.
Sandy valued friendship deeply, maintaining many long-standing connections, and had a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends.
Sandy's legacy lives on in the students she inspired, her cherished friendships, and her family, who loved her. She will be deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held on March 8, 2025, at The Masonic Center at 1150 Panorama Dr, Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Happy Cats Haven, CAST, PALS, School D-11/D-49 or the Cheyenne Mtn Zoo in Sandy's honor.
