(Harms) Barkus

Shirley Ann Barkus, 90, passed away on February 18, 2026 in Colorado Springs. She was born on May 1, 1935 in Hastings, Nebraska to Henry and Vera Harms (Smith).

Shirley grew up on the family farm near Glenvil, Nebraska. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and taught in rural Nebraska schools for five years, transitioning to office support work in later years.

Shirley moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1961 where she met Jack D. Barkus. They were married on June 5, 1965 and had three children. In 1970, the family moved to Colorado Springs, where Shirley and Jack resided for the remainder of their lives.

Shirley is survived by her children, Kenneth of Oskaloosa, Kansas; Teresa Clifford (Fred) of Divide, Colorado; Steven (Laura) of Pueblo West, Colorado; grandchildren Haley, Ronan, Kendall, Lainey, AZ & Jack; brothers Don (Sharon) & Rodger (Janice) of Nebraska; sister Mary (Donn) of Wyoming; and many nieces & nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Shirley's greatest joy was her family. She immersed herself in her role as wife and mother and was never happier than when she was reading stories to a grandchild on her lap. Shirley enjoyed gardening, needlework, travel, music, writing letters, reading, and watching football. Shirley was a member of the Church of Christ.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at the Pikes Peak Church of Christ, 1402 West Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs.
