Alan Hartwell Obituary

Alan Bert Hartwell, 71, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013, in Shreveport, Louisiana, after a brief illness. Alan was born on September 7, 1941, in Attleboro, Massachusetts, to Cora and Hilbert Hartwell. At the young age of 17 he joined the Air Force and served his military career throughout the United States, Europe and Viet Nam. He met Carol West, the love of his life, in Germany and they were married on December 14, 1962. Master Sargeant Hartwell retired from the Air Force in Colorado Springs in 1978 and moved his family to Dubach, Louisiana. As a devoted husband and father he cherished time spent with his family. His hobbies included hunting, traveling and antiquing. Alan liked researching and planning trips to explore the many wonders of the United States. He enjoyed these travels each spring and fall while accompanied by his wife and sometimes his children and their families. In addition to traveling, he looked forward to deer season, hunting with his sons and other family members. Alan is survived by his beloved wife Carol, son David Hartwell (JoAnn), daughter Sue Barfield (Russell), and son Jimmy (Melissa). He also leaves behind his precious grandchildren Martha, Abi, Jon and Harrison Hartwell and Garrett and Caroline Barfield. Other survivors include Alan's siblings Susan Woodard of Florida, Gene Clifford of Pennsylvania, Phillip Hartwell of California, and Ginny Floeter of Vermont. He was preceded in death by his parents Cora Clifford and Hilbert Hartwell. Funeral services were held in Dubach, Louisiana, on January 17. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project www.woundedwarriorsproject.org.
