Great memories and guidance from a man, mentor and coach who I was fortunate enough to have been able to also call a friend. From his first year teaching at MHS and football field to the bowling alley and trap field he was bigger than life. My parents thanked him over the years for his influence and direction in my life.
I lost track of him when I retired and took up raising TX Longhorns in AZ and remember in his History class the references he made of the breed of the west.
Here's to the Rider in the Sky...Thank you Big Al,

Mr Porter was Vice Principal and later Principal at CMHS, and was one of a kind!! He had a way to connect with all of the kids. I am sad to hear of this news, but feel lucky to have been one of his students.

I was so sad to hear about Coach Porter. He was our girls basketball and flag football coach for The Mustangs in 1971. He taught us girls in our special education weeks at Manitou how to trap shoot and waterski! We just loved him. My friend Jeri and I would baby sit his kids once in a while and he taught us how to reload his shot gun shells. We were so involved with that I hope the kids were okay! Lol We all loved being a part of his family. He was a an excellent World History teacher. One class I actually paid attention in. My condolences to his wife and family. He is missed by so many and will always be remembered as a good man, a lot of fun, talented and giving. I’ll see you on the other side Coach. Heaven is only a breath away.

We were so sorry to learn the news of Al's passing. Our Dad and Al made a pretty formidable team at Cheyenne Mt HS. I have many memories of Al and the team at our house over coffee most mornings as I left the house for school each day. Our very best thoughts are with you as you celebrate a life so very well lived.

Alan hired me in 1974. He changed my life and helped me become a member of the Manitou Springs High School community. I will always be grateful for that. He was a great high school principal because he stood up for his principles. I remember so many incidents of those early days at Manitou that reflect how important Allan's influence was. Thanks for sharing such a small part of your life with me and such a large part of your life with so many others.

I went to Manitou Springs High School with Allen, i graduated 2 years ahead of him. He and I were on baseball and basketball varsity teams together. Allen was a great HS baseball pitcher, also played football in HS, College at Otero, and Northern Colorado. He was a great trap shooter, and I enjoyed the few times I got to do that with him. In 1954 he and I took a trip to Texas and Louisiana in his 1949 Ford coupe to visit our cousins. He had his first waterskiing experience there with my cousins. I only saw allen once in a while after college but we always remained friends.

Mar and Family, we are deeply saddened by the news of Al's passing. I have many fond memories from my days at MSHS when he was Principal and even more from our paths crossing in the trapshooting world. He was a good leader, a good friend, and a good person. He will be missed. Blessings of comfort to you all. Lisa (Thero) & Tim Brough
