Alma Brereton Obituary

Alma H. (Sue) Brereton passed away on March 4, 2008 in Colorado Springs. She was born December 18, 1928 in Norwich, New York, the daughter of Maynard and Lillian Hammond of Sparrowbush, New York. She attended Port Jarvis High School, SUNY/Delhi, and West Virginia Wesleyan College. On September 9, 1950 she married Thomas F. Brereton. Sue is survived by her husband of 57 years, the Reverend Thomas Brereton; her son, Dr. Todd Brereton; her two daughters, Susan Miner (Alan), Lisa Ward (Bill); and two brothers, John and George Hammond. She has two grandchildren, Benjamin and Jacob Ward. She was preceded in death by her parents and three older brothers, Robert, Maynard, Jr., and Fred Hammond. Sue was a devoted and loving homemaker, wife and mother. She was employed for many years in the Richfield Springs, New York, school system where she taught reading. In addition, she dedicated several years in volunteer work to early childhood education as a "grand friend" in Colorado Springs schools. She also volunteered many hours of public service by providing English language skills to adults, and was a member of a crafts club that knitted infant caps for premature babies born in local hospitals. During her life she traveled widely. She was an avid reader, and she enjoyed needlework and other crafts, as well as bird watching an playing Scrabble. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grand children, Ben and Jake. Finally, her whole life was dedicated to the service of her Lord and His Church. Funeral services will be held at St. Raphael's Episcopal Church, 820 Leta Drive, Security, Colorado on Friday, March 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at the columbarium of St. Raphael's Church. In lieu of flowers, the Brereton family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Raphael's Episcopal Church.
