Alvin "Al" Leo Kuosman passed away on March 28, 2026 in Colorado Springs at the age of 87.
He is survived by his beloved wife of over 65 years, Jacqueline "Jackie" Louise Kuosman, and their children Carol, David (Christy), Debra "Debbie" (Greg Gish), and John (Nikki), and their grandchildren Jack D'Errico, Luke D'Errico, Katy Kuosman, Anne Kuosman, Jacob Gish, Ryann Kuosman and Hadley Kuosman. He was predeceased by their eldest son, Carl, who passed in 2017 at the age of 54.
Al was born in
Monessen, PA as the eldest of three sons of Leo David Kuosman and Emilia "Millie" Kuosman. His middle brother, Larry Kuosman passed in 2013, and his youngest brother Donald "Donnie" Kuosman (Linda) currently resides in
Pittsburgh, PA.
As a child, Al lived in a close-knit Finnish and Czech community in
Monessen, PA and worked at their family's storefront business (Kuosman Hardware) which was run by his father and his three uncles. Throughout his life, Al enjoyed using many of the skills and discipline learned at the family hardware and construction business on numerous renovation and new construction projects at their home. In his youth, Al understood and was taught the Czech language by his maternal grandmother "Grandma Coch" who (along with his parents) was a guiding light in his early formative years.
Al attended Pennsylvania State University where he met Jackie and received a B.S. in petroleum engineering. After marriage, Al and Jackie moved to Vernal, Utah where Al worked as a petroleum engineer servicing oil wells for Haliburton Company. The growing family then moved to Salt Lake City, where Al worked on the Minuteman and Polaris Missile projects for Hercules Powder Company at their Bacchus Plant southeast of Salt Lake City. While simultaneously working for Hercules Powder, Al earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Utah.
In 1965 the family moved to
Farmington, NM where Al worked as an Assembly Foreman at Fairchild Semiconductor in Shiprock, NM. Al considered his work and friendship with the women of the Navajo Nation at the Fairchild Semiconductor facility a treasure in his life.
In 1968 the family moved to Colorado Springs where Al pursued his passion for investing and the stock market and served his community as a financial advisor initially with Goodbody & Co., and then with Merrill Lynch until his retirement over thirty years later. Al also served as a coach of many youth basketball teams at the YMCA, and as was also involved in various other service organizations in the Colorado Springs area.
Al had a beautiful, playful, creative, and inquisitive mind that he kept active in retirement with reading and intensive studies covering a multitude of interests and disciplines. Al was willfully determined to care for and offer his expertise to his family and to those outside his family who crossed his path and he grew to love. His memory of details associated with people he cared for was unmatched. Al was a force of nature when he opened his heart and mind to you!
Al loved the outdoors and his favorite activities involved adventures with his family that included white water rafting, hunting, fishing and camping, and working on various renovation and new construction projects associated with the family property.
Al was cremated, and his ashes will be scattered at various locations with predeceased family members in Colorado Springs and
Monessen, PA.
There will be no public memorial service celebrating Al's life, and the family respectfully requests that no flowers be sent to the family. Any memorial contributions desired to be made to any charity in Al's honor (or on his behalf) should be selected and directed as so moved by the donor's heart.
