Carl Gustavus Breuning, Jr., 88, passed away at home in Calhan, Colorado, on December 20, 2025, after a long bout with cancer, with his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Harmon Breuning, at his side. A devoted husband, lifelong outdoorsman, and cherished friend to many, Carl lived a life full of adventure and generosity.
Carl graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in economics and later earned a master's degree in education. He dedicated his professional life to helping others as a guidance counselor until his retirement, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
Born with a love for the outdoors, Carl enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping in places few had ever ventured. His passion for nature was matched by his zeal for the stock market, which he pursued as a favorite hobby. Carl was an active member of the Lions Club and proudly held the title of 32nd Degree Mason, reflecting his commitment to service and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Gustavus Breuning, Sr., and Myrtle Mae Breuning of Las Vegas, New Mexico, as well as several brothers-in-law. He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis Harmon Breuning, along with cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will remember his warmth and adventurous spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lions Club Eye Bank in Carl's honor.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 3rd, 2026 at 2:00pm with interment at Choate Prairie Cemetery in Oklahoma. Service arrangements are being provided by Bishop's Funeral Home in McAlester, Oklahoma.
