Charles Brown Obituary

Charles Brown was born on June 10, 1943 in Somerville, Tennessee to Mr. Charlie and Versie Mae Holloway Brown, both of whom precede him in death. Charles left Somerville after graduating high school to join the United States Army and would later serve in both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. His 30-year career in the Army garnered numerous awards and accolades. Charles retired March 1993 at the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

Charles and Sylvia Ann Summerville Brown married on June 21, 1988 in Copperas Cove, Texas. They moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in February 1990 with their two children. Charles was stationed at Fort Carson Army Post in February 1990 with the 503rd Unit, 64th Transportation Battalion and 68th Transportation Battalion where he served until retirement. After retirement, Charles and Sylvia have happily resided in Colorado Springs, CO and have called it home.

Following his decorated military career, Charles worked in the insurance industry for two years before transitioning to work with at-risk youth for fourteen years. In 2009, Charles fully retired. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, watching sports, reading his bible daily, while continuing to be of benefit and service to others.

Charles was a faithful member of Prussman Chapel where he served as president of the Parish Council, a Sunday School and Bible Study teacher, prayer warrior, men's choir member, welcome committee member for new soldiers, and an usher. He volunteered faithfully at the Springs Rescue Mission where he ministered to and served food to the homeless. Charles was also a member of The Retired Enlisted Association.

Charles was the father of seven children. Daughters: Trina Brown, Jamaica, NY, Shelia Brown, Newport News, VA, and step-daughter Danielle Summerville, Colorado Springs, CO. Sons: Calvin Brown, deceased, Monte Brown, Newport News, VA, step-son Jesse (Tammy) Black, Columbia, SC, and step-son Donta Summerville, deceased. Charles has 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Charles is the third of seven brothers and sisters. Brothers, Walter Brown and Aaron Brown and sister Versie Marie Brown-Dotson precede him in death. He leaves behind three brothers: Ray (Annie) Brown, Wayne (Diane) Brown, and Carl (Gloria) Brown, Somerville, TN and a host of family members, his Prussman Chapel Church family, and friends.

Friends and family are invited to attend Visitation on Friday, April 17, 5:00pm-7:00pm at Angelus Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 10:00am, Soldier's Memorial Chapel, 6333 Martinez

I will forever cherish the fond memories and brotherly love Charles and I established during my time as staff chaplain with the Gospel Congregation at Fort Carson. God's holy spirit, grace, and sitting in the same church pew that Brother Charly sat helped me through my grief period. See you in heaven bro! CH (LTC) Luis LopezColon

Once again God saw the road was getting rough, and the road of life had become too hard to for CSM Charles Bell, USASMA Class 22 to travel and called him home. You remind us, Lord, through Solomon that to everything there is a season. We thank You for the earthly life You gave to this sergeant major and for the blessing during the sojourn here on the earth. We most especially thank You for the new life You granted this sergeant major in Jesus Christ. He broke the bonds of death by His resurrection. We rejoice at the hope of being reunited with him in the resurrection of all flesh. The NCO Corps thanks him for his selfless service act and his willingness to defend of America and all that we hold sacred. I believe for every fallen sergeant major like him there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift God has given the Corps. Rest easy, sleep well my brother. Know the line was held, your job is done. Rest easy, sleep well. Others have taken up where you fell, the line has held. Peace, peace, and farewell

Brother Charlie.....you have been a great Christian Warriors in God's Army. You have use all the weapons system that God gave you (Prayers, Bible Study, and Sunday School) to strengthen the warriors you lead. Whether it was at Prussman Chapel, in your community, or while meeting newly arriving Soldiers on Fort Carson your servant attitude was notice. You provided me and my family wise counsel, and what God expect from his leaders and family. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell[b] with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more;mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.

Thank you Brother Brown for being a soldier in God's Army! Well done, good and faithful servant! Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them." Rev 14:13 NIV. Today we mourn the loss of our friend. Nevertheless, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil. God bless you Brother Brown and may the Lord give peace and comfort to Sylvia and the Brown Family. We will miss you on earth and will celebrate and rejoice with you when we get to heaven. Hallelujah!
