Dennis Bruns Obituary

Dennis E. Bruns, beloved husband of Doris Plankinton Bruns for 47 years, died unexpectedly while enjoying a routine bike ride September 5, 2005. He passed away quickly from his earthly life of 68 years and immediately into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Dennis was born October 28, 1936, in Waterloo, Iowa to Arthur and Irene Bruns, but always considered Colorado his home as he relocated to this state at the early age of seven. Dennis graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 1954 and Western State College in 1958. He married his college sweetheart, Doris on July 27, 1958. Dennis taught high school biology, chemistry and physical science for 47 years; 34 of those years were taught at Lamar High School in Lamar, Colorado where he impressively coached the 4A girls' basketball team to four consecutive state championships. Dennis coached track and field and cross country as well. After retiring from public school teaching in Lamar, Dennis and his bride moved to Colorado Springs in 1998, where Dennis resumed teaching high school science at Evangelical Christian Academy and coaching the boys' basketball team. Dennis successfully coached the ECA boys' basketball team to two back-to-back state championships in 2004 and 2005. Dennis Bruns was an active member of Village Seven Presbyterian Church here in Colorado Springs. Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Plankinton Bruns and two children; Alan D. Bruns and his wife, Joyce Thompson Bruns of Colorado Springs; Aimee Bruns Palumbo and her husband, Donald R. Palumbo of Ashburn, VA; four grandchildren, Joshua Bruns, Ashley Bruns, Brandon Palumbo, and Jordon Palumbo; two sisters, JoAnn Bruns Natomeli and her husband, Aldo Natomeli of Aurora, CO; and Karen Bruns of Independence, MO. Countless high school students taught and coached over the years by Coach Bruns will miss him greatly. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 8, 2005, at Swan Law Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, September 9, 2005, at Village Seven Presbyterian Church, 4050 Nonchalant Circle South, Colorado Springs, CO. Friends, family, and fans of high school basketball may honor the memory of Dennis E. Bruns and his commitment to Christian education, coupled with a lifetime of learning and coaching by contributing to The Dennis E. Bruns Memorial, c/o Evangelical Christian Academy, 4050 Nonchalant Circle South, Colorado Springs, CO 80917.

Coach Bruns, I extend my gratitude towards you for the things you did for me as a young man. As my cross country and track coach at Lamar, as a disciplinarian to an unruly teenager, and mostly as a surrogate father in a time of need. You taught me what it takes to be an athlete, you encouraged me to go to college, and you were a perfect role model of how to be a good family man. My thoughts and prayers are with you Mrs. Bruns and your family. Your husband had a great role in many peoples lives, a great family, and many friends. I can only hope to be anything like him.

Love and prayers,

Dear Doris and family,

We were shocked to learn of Dennis' death. He was a real friend and colleague during our Lamar days. We appreciated his Christian lifestyle and friendship. You'll never know how much it meant to us to have Dennis and Doris show up in Manhattan two weeks ago to join in our 50th wedding celebration. What a wonderful surprise!! It is something we will always remember and cherish, especially the hugs.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and will continue with you in the days and weeks ahead.

May the grace and peace of our Lord and Savior be with all of you.

Your friends, Wayne and Bev

To the Bruns family,

Coach Bruns was an amazing man and a tremendous influence on Andy and his friends. I am comforted by the fact that he is playing hoops in Heaven. I am grateful for the time God allowed him to be here. My family and friends were blessed by his Christian witness, his love and dedication to the students and the demonstration of love to his wife and family. Thank you for allowing others to share your husband, father and grandfather. God bless you!

(Dennis) Coach Bruns had quite an impact on my life during the period he taught and coached at LHS. I believe that his influence encouraged me to be a better bus driver. He may have never know that he played a big part in me becoming an

activity driver. He was always one of my favorite coaches and made each trip enjoyable. In fact I think Dennis Bruns was a hero to a lot of students, staff as well as his fellow coaches. His continuing dedication to student achievement was phenmonal. He was a kind and caring gentleman, and I will miss his words of encouragement and concern. May God be with you, Doris, Amy and Alan and your families. I know Dennis loved his family dearly as he spoke of you often. Much Love Sheila and Alex
