Dorothy was the beloved only child of Henry and Louise Hansel. She grew up in Brooklyn Park, Maryland and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland with a major in history and education. She taught middle school history and English for several years. In 1955 she married the love of her life, Hans Heinz Krimm, with whom she shared a 65-year marriage up until his death. In 1963, she moved to Colorado Springs when Hans accepted a faculty position at Colorado College.
The most important thing to Dorothy throughout her life was her family. She left teaching to care for her two children, Hans and Myra. As she became a grandmother (a.k.a. Mum), she retained a contagious playfulness and had the ability to relate to each child, from mud baths in a kiddie pool to remembering minutia of each of their adult lives.
Dorothy was a lifelong learner and avid reader, with curiosity leading her to the World Book Encyclopedia at almost every mealtime. She enjoyed scrapbooking, coloring and gardening. Her passion was the outdoors and its wildlife. She loved all animals, wild and domestic, especially her dogs and beloved stuffed elephant, Eddie. Dorothy, always with Hans or her children by her side, loved hiking, camping, birdwatching and spotting wildflowers. This led her to be an ardent environmentalist and a member of many national and local environmental organizations, including the Aiken Audubon Society and SPABA. She was a member of First Congregational Church and an active member of the Democratic Party.
She sustained a close relationship with both children across the years and miles, particularly after her husband Hans's passing, with daily calls and regular visits from Myra Hansen of Colorado Springs and nightly calls and poetry discussion with son Hans Krimm of Silver Spring, Maryland. Also left to grieve and to miss her deeply are her son in law James Hansen, daughter in law Linda Krimm and grandchildren Lilli and Mary Hansen of Colorado Springs, Charles Hansen of Kremmling, Colorado, Audrey Krimm of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Amy Krimm of London, U.K.
There will be a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery, Monday, November 10 at 11:00 A.M. Memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region or World Wildlife Fund.
