Elmo Cunningham Obituary

Elmo Eugene Cunningham, age 90, a resident of the Bruce McCandless State Veterans Home in Florence, Colorado and formerly a long time resident of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. He had retired after 23 years in the United States Army and 21 years in the brokerage industry. Mr. Cunningham was born in 1921 in Conway, Arkansas to the late Sam and Ola (Brooks) Cunningham. He was married in 1949 for 36 years to Genevieve Belt Cunningham. Genevieve passed away in 2009. He is survived by two daughters, Lauren Cunningham and Jeannine Cunningham of Pueblo, Colorado; and one sister, Adele Fedric of Sheridan, Arkansas. Following graduation from Malvern High School in Arkansas in 1939, he attended Southern University of Arkansas, and later attended and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1946. He was an Army Artillery officer, retiring early after 20 years with the grade of Lt. Colonel. He was a veteran of two wars and was the recipient of a number of decorations, campaign medals, and commendations. In his second career, Mr. Cunningham was a stock broker in Colorado Springs, mostly with Dain Bosworth. He was a longtime member of the Broadmoor Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a life member of the local and national Retired Officers Association, now MOAA. He was a long time member and supporter of the YMCA, active in community service, and was a writer. Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at the Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel. Cremation is planned and he will be inurned at the Shrine of Remembrance, Columbarium of Love. Memorials in his name may be made to the Pueblo Regional Center.
