George Randolph Douthit III

George Douthit Obituary

George Randolph Douthit, III passed away January 9, 2015, at home with dignity, grace, and a sense of humor, after living with cancer the past few years. George was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on November 22, 1926, to Ruth Beck Douthit and George Randolph Douthit, II.

George's career included newspaper reporting for the Gazette Telegraph in Colorado Springs in the early 1960's; working for the National Council on Alcoholism in the late 1960's and the early 1970's. George helped establish Washington House, a treatment center for alcoholics, in north Denver during the mid-70's. He was the founder of The Mountain States Collector, a journal for antique dealers and collectors.

George was a talented artist, award-winning author, playwright, poet, and a lover of nature and beautiful colors. He strove to grow spiritually up to the end of his life.

George leaves behind his wife and soul mate of 61 years, Alice; and his children, Valorie (Garry), Vickie (Mark), Veronica (Gary), George (Cheryl), Kathrine (John); 16 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. George also left behind many friends who shared his love for their mutual friend, Bill W. In addition George loved his fellow artists and writers with a passion.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ruth and George, and his beloved brother, Ronald Douthit.

I think of George every day when I paint. I was 59 when I met George 8 years ago and was one of those who said I couldn't draw a stick figure, but he encouraged me and now I can actually call myself an artist! Thank you, George, you changed my life.

George' passing is a great, great loss for the hundreds and hundreds of people he guided into and through their recoveries. I can count six times that he just seemed to appear when I needed someone of his unique character to help me move forward. I'll meet you at the door George.
