Heriberto Leyba Jr., 90, of Security, Colorado passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022 after a short illness.
Born in Llano, New Mexico to Heriberto Leyba and Victoriana Tafoya on September 14, 1932, he moved to Bell's Camp, Colorado at the age of three and grew up and attended schools in Bell's Camp and Minturn, Colorado. He joined the Army at age 17 and served in the Korean War from 1949 to 1952. He returned home after the war and worked on the railroad and in the mines in the Tennessee Pass and Leadville area.
Mr. Leyba met and married Joyce DuPont on a snowy January day in 1957 in Leadville, Colorado. He and his growing family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he worked at the newly built Air Force Academy in the mess hall and then spent most of his career working as a meatcutter at the Fort Carson Commissary. After retirement, he continued to work in the meat cutting business for a small butcher shop and Walmart until the age of 77.
Mr. Leyba was a devout believer in Jesus Christ and supported many Christian ministries. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, building and fixing things around the house and spending time with family, friends, and especially his beloved grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; his children, Herbert D., Edith (Jeff) Becvar, Theresa, Mark (Jennifer), and Ernest; his brother, George (Julia); his sixteen grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Heriberto and Victoriana Leyba; and his siblings, Nora, Walter, Cora, Olita, Leonarda, Joe, Raquel, and Alfred.
A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00PM, Friday, Oct. 14, 2022, followed by a memorial service at 2:00PM, at the Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 East Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO. 80910. A reception will follow.
