Ian Weikel Obituary

Captain Ian Weikel was killed in action on April 18, 2006, while serving his country in Iraq. Ian was a husband, father, son, brother, friend, and soldier. Ian loved his Lord, his family, his soldiers, and his country. Ian was a warrior, for his country, and for his Lord Jesus Christ. Ian grew up in Colorado Springs and graduated from Fountain-Ft. Carson High School. After graduating from West Point, he was stationed at Fort Carson and Fort Hood, TX. He served overseas in Bosnia and was serving his second tour in Iraq. Ian will be missed by his wife Wendy, his eight-month-old son Jonathan Troy, his parents Dave and Beth, his brother Chad, his grampa Bill, and countless friends and soldiers. Contributions can be made to the Jonathan Troy Weikel's Education Fund at The Bank at Broadmoor, 501 South Tejon Street. Ian's life will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26th, at Woodmen Valley Chapel. He will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. It was not the way Ian died that made him a hero; it was the way he lived.

Ian - your influence continues to shine light on those of us that had the great good fortune to cross paths with you, and on many that never knew you. The school named in your honor was recently recognized by the Governor of Colorado and the Colorado Department of Education for their ongoing mission to serve the children of military families. Your legacy is thriving in the community that raised you! My daughter Beth is still a teacher at Weikel Elementary and accepted the recognition on behalf of the staff. You are never far from my thoughts. Godspeed my friend ... Coach Moe

Ghost 6 this is Ghost 14,

I am in my last two weeks of battalion command. As I assess my commanders and advise and teach them, I am in awe of who you were as a leader. I have modeled my leadership approach after what you taught me, in such a short period of time, and for over 20 years that approach to leadership has not failed me.
Thank you for showing me that my faith in God and others was just as much of a strength as my tactical and technical knowledge. Thank you for going the extra mile, sitting with each of us, talking to each of us, demonstrating the importance of one on one communication not only out of necessity but because you cared. Know that your example has continued to live on in me and I will continue to let the Soldiers, who continue to serve with me, know how great a leader, human being, and friend you truly were. Thank you for sharing your light with us. We miss you brother.

P.S
I recently met the Soldier who was responsible for removing the person who took you from us from this celestial plane. We had an indepth conversation about the operation, post our redeployment, and how their main goal was to have a mutual impact on that persons well being. It was comforting to here that your absence, and the cause thereof, did not cease to carry importance once we departed country. I am thankful that our work and your sacrifice were honored even after our departure.

Ghost 6, this is Ghost 14,
We love you brother.

Thank you. You were an amazing human being who has reminded me everyday of my career, that people are the most thing in our profession. You took the time to talk to me. You shared so much. I try everyday to ensure I instill that same feeling into those that I lead. Your words and ideas have lasted for over 18 years. I share who you were with the leaders in my battalion. Thank you for showing me how to be a great leader. We have been on this journey together for almost two decades and I am blessed to have served with you to witness greatness. Late splash over.

Friends & Family of Ian - it's hard to believe it's been 17 years since Ian went to be with the Lord. I think of him, Wendy, and JT often. Ian was an inspiration to me, and I've tried hard to prevent his memory from fading. He was a fellow Company Commander and Leader of Soldiers who was always there for me when I needed him, on the battlefield and as a friend. As another year passes, never forget Ian and all those brothers- and sisters-in-arms who died to uphold the ideals of democracy and freedom throughout the World.

Ghost 6 this is Ghost 14, every year I revisit what advice would you give me when I called to speak about life and my career. What words of wisdom would you share as my mentor? Although I wonder, my heart knows what you would say, because in such a short time, I observed you live it. Most importantly, I KNOW you would say keep the faith and know that God will direct my path. Would you have commanded a Squadron or Battalion? As I prepare to lead Soldiers and leaders once again, know that your example remains a measure to which I wish and dream to aspire and achieve. This young 2LT you welcomed in and took the time to coach and mentor has never forgotten a moment. Ghost 6 this is Ghost 14, thank you for sharing the amazing gift of caring and showing me that caring is always the path to success. Ghost 6 this is Ghost 14 over. Negative comms, this Ghost 14 out.

Ghost 6, this is Ghost 14, as I wait to hear of my board results I think of you. I think of the example you set so early in my career and your potential that was lost so prematurely. The man you were lives on through me. By this point you would have already commanded your Battalion and either be at the War College or selected for Colonel. Perhaps you would have decided to retire and spend time with Wendy and Jonathan. Would you have a larger family, brothers or sisters for little Jonathan who is not so little now. I remember the Christmas party before our deployment like it was yesterday. The three of you in front of the tree handing out presents. How life progresses and we remember. Would we still be close? I'd like to think so. I know so. You inspire me still today. You are in my thoughts, your words are with me, and the mentor and example you were to me warms my heart and drives me to be better for those I serve with and for. You were the ultimate servant leader and I hope to have been a similar example to those I have served with. I miss you my brother. Ghost 6 this is Ghost 14, Thank you.

Ian,
Sitting in this tent on memorial day not far from where you were. Patching up other soldiers from similar incidents, makes me realize that I always think of you when I am doing my job. Every memorial bracelet I see, makes me think of you. We were young then. Now I'm old. We couldn't imagine being as old as the brigade commanders. Now I'm here. I'd rather be where you are. I miss you brother. I pray regularly for Wendy and the kids. Enjoy home. I'll be there sooner or later.

As we approach this thirteen year mark, the memories of your time with us remain vivid. I continue to visit your school routinely, Bethany, my daughter is still teaching 1st grade there, and my wife volunteers weekly. Last week I did a presentation to several classes of students, the topic was Washington, DC - I encouraged them to visit ANC & section 60 to introduce themselves to their schools namesake. Your influence remains strong, and your legacy grows. I continue to come across soldiers that served with you, several whose children have attended Weikel Elementary. You made this job look so easy even though I know it was not. I am greatful for having been able to witness and experience what it is to be a leader and what is important when leading Soldiers. Your guiding principles given to me in your command philosophy and the book you left for me still guide me today. For the past 8 years - we have all had another guardian angel – watching over all of us, guiding us, caring for us, and loving us. Ian has moved to a place where he can lead from the heart and serve even more than he ever could here with any of us.

We are all fortunate to have shared in Ian Weikel's life here on earth –we all will savor those memories and his life will live on in our stories, in our thoughts and in our actions….

Ian Weikel understood the price of excellence ….and was willing to pay for it not only by sacrificing his life, …………..but with how he lived his life…..he lived to serve others…

I received notification last month that I am now promotable to Major and at that moment I flashed back to that look that I remember so well and that face of excitement and accomplishment. To CPT Weikel's family and friends,

I was on the surgical team that tried to save Ian's life at the 332nd Air Force Theater Hospital on Balad Air Base. Although more than 7 years have passed, and I treated hundreds of soldiers while I was there, I still remember that day as vividly as if it happened yesterday. Every life that we lost affected me, but none more so than Ian's. The reason, I believe, is twofold. The first was how long and mightily we struggled in the OR to try to keep him alive. For whatever it's worth at this point, you can be sure that we did absolutely everything in our power to save him. The second was how profoundly his loss affected his unit and chain of command. When Ian's battalion commander was given the news by our neurosurgeon, he and his staff wept openly. Although I did not know who CPT Weikel was at the time, it was clear to me that he was an officer who was loved and respected by his seniors and subordinates alike. On this Veteran's Day, I stand with you in remembrance of who Ian was and what he sacrificed that day.

Wendy, just wanted to say that I visit Ian every year with cadets. I also talk about him here at the Academy during our annual Yearling Cemetery tour. Today I found an old e-mail from him on 12 May 97 (from your account!) that I will share with cadets next month on that tour. He was a great cadet, officer and man. I hope all is well with you and yours, Wendy.

My name is SSG Susi, Michael and I served in OIF 1 with your wife as my company commander CPT Weikel. I remember using your company's qualification range to qualifiy as a piggy back because your wife my commander wanted me to update my weapons qualification. I never spoke to you, but you had this vibe that you were a nice person and I'm sure you are. I just found out that you have gone to a better place. CPT Wendy Weikel... Maam, I just want to say you were one of the best commanders that I have ever had and my prayers go out to your family. CPT Weikel.. Sir, may you rest in peace. Again, my prayers go out to the whole Weikel family.

I did not know Ian, nor did either of my sons serve with him, though I'm sure it would have been an honor. I watched the music video that I accessed through the Fort Hood Gold Star website and realized at the end that I've passed Ian's marker at Arlington many times on the way to my son's site. I don't know why, but I've always been drawn to his marker for an extra moment and prayer. I know now that he was a wonderful man with a beautiful family.

I will keep your family in my daily prayers.

Hello Wendy and family:
I am SGT. Nick Kucharski's mom. My heart is so sad for your loss. I recievied a phone call from Nic on the day of Ian's funeral at Arlington. The tears he wept for his fallen hero were unstopping. He was inconsolable. He will carry this pain forever, the loss of Ian and the others in October.
Being a widow myself, I know time will soften the heartache and alow the memories to shine through. May you, Jonathan, Chad and all know that prayers still go up every night for this fallen American hero.

Wendy.....I am so sorry. When I found this page, the first thing I thought about was the bar-b-que at your house.....the chicken that Ian didn't get completely cooked...you making the Joes do aerobics for pt.....lol. That was over two years ago. Take care of yourself and your son.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Wendy,
I know it has been a year since Ian's death, but I just learned of his passing. I just wanted to say that from the brief time that I met him when you introduced me to your husband (Captain's Career Course) I could tell he was a great guy. I'm sorry for your loss. I know that you, Jonathan, and Ian's family are so very proud of how Ian was able to touch and change the lives of so many people. I can only imagine how overjoyed the Lord is to have had such a devoted servant in spreading the gospel to everyone around him.
