Jean Cartwright Obituary

Jean C. Cartwright, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, August 19, 2009 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She lived much of her life locally, enjoying her family, friends and the community. Jean Campbell was born May 27, 1933 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to William and Mae (Pettebone) Campbell. Growing up in Colorado Springs she attended Steele Elementary, North Junior, and Palmer High Schools. She graduated from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She married Lt. Col. Jack A. Cartwright in 1956 and supported his Air Force career, moving with him to Alaska, Hawaii, and California. In 1961 they brought their three daughters back to Colorado Springs where Jack retired in 1965. Jean was very active in the community. She volunteered and worked with many non-profit boards including: The Junior League of Colorado Springs, Children's Theater, Newborn Hearing Testing, The Health Association, Mental Health Association, and the American Red Cross. As a passionate gardener, she was the former President and a founding member of the Pikes Peak Rose Society, a member of The American Rose Society (a Consulting Rosarian) and Horticultural Arts Society (H. Cannell Founder's Award), as well as a CSU Master Gardener. Jean is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth C. (Gregory) Flierl of Beaverdam, Virginia, Pamela Cartwright of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Ann C. (Chuck) Rohde of Colorado Springs; brother Oliver (Jan) Campbell of Sun City West, Arizona; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Lt. Col. Jack Cartwright; her parents, William and Mae Campbell and her brother, Dr. William A. Campbell III. A celebration of life will be held in her honor at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday August 25, 2009 at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful� Chapel of Roses.
