Joan Lundberg Obituary

Joan Bergdoll Lundberg, 82, wife of Edward Francis Lundberg of Surprise, Arizona, died at home in her sleep on May 11, 2010 with Ed by her side. She was the loving mother of Dr. Quay (“Trooper) Snyder of Monument, CO, Brigadier General David (“Tanker) Snyder, USAF, Retired, of Tampa, FL and Joanna Snyder of Cayucos, CA. She was a very special grandmother to Dane, Sara, Quay III and Claire. She is survived by Edward and his wonderful family Edward III, Jon, Douglas, and the late Janet Liles. She is survived by one brother, John George Bergdoll Esq. and four sisters: Janet Cassimatis, Jane Allen, Joyce Fitzpatrick, and Dr. Jacqueline Hershberger. Among the many beautiful qualities that Joan possessed, she will be most remembered by family and friends for the sincere love and caring concern she showered upon all who knew her. Joan always had a kind word and found the best qualities in everyone she met. Joan Maralyn Bergdoll was born in York, PA to John George and Ethel Elizabeth Jennings Bergdoll. She attended local schools and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in York. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1950. Upon graduation Joan worked several years for Children's Services of York County before moving to Highland Falls, NY to live and work near her high school sweetheart, Quay Carlton Snyder, whom she married upon his graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point on June 8, 1954. A dedicated Army officer's wife, Joan accompanied her husband to many postings including Fort Benning, GA, where Trooper was born, Fort Bragg, NC, where Tanker was born, and Munich, Germany, where Joanna entered the world. After tours on the faculty at West Point and serving as a pilot in Vietnam, Quay had his final assignment at the Army War College in Carlisle, PA where Quay and Joan retired from Army service in 1978. The family settled in Mechanicsburg, PA and Joan return to school and earned her Master's Degree from Temple University. The couple moved to Monument, CO in 1988, where Quay served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Air Force Academy, serving on the faculty with his two sons until he passed away in 1990 at age 60. Joan endowed the Quay C. Snyder Memorial Award for the outstanding instructor role-model at the Air Force Academy Department of Management. After resettling in downtown Colorado Springs, Joan met and fell in love with her surviving husband, Ed, a retired Air Force Colonel and lifetime professional pilot. They married on November 25, 1994 at the First Presbyterian Church and spent their years together in Colorado, before moving between Tampa, Florida and Surprise, Arizona. Ed and Joan were soul mates who loved to travel and spent much of their happy marriage exploring the world together. Joan was open to adventure which included solo parasailing in Peru and a week spent on an Outward Bound excursion with participants half her age. Her life was always busy, filled with new experiences and new friends, but there was never a moment when her family was not foremost in her life. One of Joan's proud accomplishments was researching and dedicating the family history (Pfaltzgraff and Jennings) of her mother in a book entitled “Little Weisskopff. She lovingly documented and compiled the book to share with the generations that follow. In that book, Joan dedicates Proverbs 3: 25-26 to her mother, Ethel Jennings Bergdoll: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. Joan's husband, children, siblings and friends now raise that Proverb to Joan in her memory. The memorial service celebrating Joan's wonderful life will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the Grace Community Church, 16165 West Mountain View Blvd., Sun City Grand, Surprise, AZ 85374. Interment services will be held later in the year in Omaha, Nebraska at the Lundberg family lot and in October at the USAF Academy Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Joan expressed were wishes to support Habitat for Humanity (www.habitat.org), St. Mary's Food Bank (firstfoodbank.org) and Hospice of the Valley (www.hov.org) Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

My mom remembers Joan from Bible studies at Carlisle. "She was so friendly" was her immediate response. Absolutely no surprise there, Joanna. You are very like your mom. My prayers are with you and your family.

This is just a brief farewell. I know that we will meet again when the Lord comes to take us home at last. Meanwhile may He comfort you, Ed, Joanna, Trooper and Tanker and those of us who loved my sister Joan.
