John Bearzi Obituary

Long-time Colorado Springs resident John Carlo Bearzi died Sunday, December 13, 2009, in Rancho Mirage, California. He was 85. The son of Luigi Italo and Clara (Scagliarini) Bearzi, he was born July 1, 1924 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where he attended public schools. He found his life-long love of music early on by taking piano lessons and going to Boston Symphony concerts at Tanglewood as a child. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, boarding a train bound for San Diego for basic training. It was his first trip west of the Hudson River. He was deployed to Eastern Europe, and after VE Day, returned to the States for training for the invasion of Japan that never happened. After his discharge, he attended Champlain College in Plattsburg, New York. A call from a friend out West convinced young John to finish his studies at Colorado College. Upon arrival in Colorado Springs in 1951, he knew he was home. While at CC, John met a cute local girl, Joan Bischof. They courted, and wed September 11, 1952. Both John and Joan completed their B.A. degrees in music, with minors in English and history in 1954. By then they had also begun their family, with the birth of their first child, Michael, the previous year. To support his growing family, John held many jobs: bartender, tour driver up Pikes Peak; giving piano lessons. Many Springs parents and children, however, remember John as a longtime public school teacher, teaching choir at Cheyenne Mountain and Wasson High Schools, and English and history at Palmer High School. His career spanned over 30 years, and touched the lives of hundreds of Colorado Springs children. John and Joan spent their retirement years traveling, often with their children and grandchildren, around the globe. John was happiest, however, taking in the sun wherever he was. Survivors include his wife, Joan Bearzi of Colorado Springs; sister Eleanor Secunda of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; son Peter and his wife, Denise Mariman; daughter Judi Johansen and her husband, Kirk; son James and his wife Mary; daughter-in-law Renee St. Aubin; grandchildren Alex, Tony, Madeline, Sam, and Anna; step-grandchildren Josh and Lucas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luigi and Clara, and his son, Michael. Friends and family may drop by the PEO Chapter House, 1819 W. Cheyenne Road, on Saturday, December 19, 2009, between 2:00- 5:00 p.m. to remember John. Donations may be made to: The Colorado PEO Chapter House, Care and Share, Empty Stocking, or a charity of their choice.

Mrs. Bearzi-I am sorry for your loss. I had Mr. Bearzi as a choir teacher at Palmer. He was an inspiration. I am now a teacher myself and hope to inspire students as he did.

Mr. Bearzi was one of the best teachers I ever had at Palmer ('83-86). I will always remember him fondly. Thank you for everything Mr. B, you will be missed!

Like so many of his students, I also have fond memories of his direction as my choir teacher. I teach high school English, and I find myself using Mr. Bearzi's lines of encouragement and humor. My sympathies to the family on the loss of this wonderful man and teacher.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Bearzi. I was in choir at Wasson from 1969 to 1971 and have fond memories of our concerts under his direction. My fondest memory was playing the part of the Mayor of Dog Patch in Li'l Abner. Mr. Bearzi expected the best from his students but always made it fun. My condolences to the entire Bearzi family.

Mr Bearzi was a great teacher and the reason I pursued a career in Music Education. He recognized my talent, encouraged me to learn and introduced me to classical music. Daily I strive to be the teacher to my students as he was to me. I'm saddened by his passing. My condolences to his family.

My heart is saddened tonight at the loss of Mr.B. I was in choir at Wasson from 1969 to 1971 under his direction. There are so many memories and wonderful moments from those years with him that have carried me over the years and will continue to do so. We took a choir trip to Westcliff one year and I took a hike with him up one side of the Mt. From that time forward he called me Mt Masuvious because of my energy. He will be forever with me. My prayers to the family. Thanks Mr. B for the memories. Paula Fischer Stock

Mr. Bearzi introduced me to the love of Choral music. I was a student of his from 1969-1971, and was in the Wa-Tones, and Choristers. He was a great teacher, who made us laugh, and we had fun with him and sometimes called him "Mr. Bazoozi"! Ha! I will never forget those three years at Wasson. We also did Li'l Abner the musical. I got to do the part of Senator Fogbound! Many years later in the late 70's to early 80's, Mr. Bearzi moved to Palmer High School and taught vocal music to at least three of my younger brothers and sisters! I developed a new relationship with him as I would arrange to audio record the choir concerts and musicals at that time. He was so grateful for my recording work for the students, he treated me to dinner a couple times at one of his favorite little places downtown at the time, the J's Motor Hotel Cafe. I was just thinking of him recently in November when I went to the Wasson High School 50th Anniversary celebration and wondered how he was doing....I sure will miss him! God bless you, Mr. Bearzi! I am a better person (and singer) because of your positive influence on me. I enjoyed meeting members of the Bearzi Family today...Love you, Mr. Bearzi!

Rest In Peace.....

Mrs. Bearzi and family, I was in Choir and Wa-tones at Wasson High school from 1972 - 1975. I also had the pleasure of assisting Mr. Bearzi with the music library. He had been on my mind lately and I was wondering how he was doing. He was such a wonderful music director and always pushed us to do our best. Mr Bearzi was a gift to all of us that were ever taught by him. My love and prayers go out to all of you. Janet Perry

Mrs. Bearzi-many of us know that Mr. Bearzi began at Palmer as the choir director-he really was the one who began my career-I have been directing choirs in schools now for 23 years-I am now in Mr. Bearzi's position. I am choir director at Palmer now. I wouldn't be here without his influence on my life. I am saddened by your loss-but please know-he was very important to many of us-we will never forget him.
In God's peace,

Dear Joan & Family, Mr. Bearzi was by far one of my favorite teachers at Wasson High School 1969-1971. I sang in the choir and he was often times the bright spot of the day. He was smart, funny, and a talented choir director. We are so sorry for your loss and we send heartfelt sympathies to Mrs. Bearzi and his family.

As publishers of the local newspaper at the time, we became acquainted with John and Joan when John was teaching music in the Simla, Colorado schools in the mid-1950s. He was very talented, well liked and well respected, a credit to his profession.

Mr. Bearzi was my favorite teacher at Palmer. I had him for English Lit and our choir class always knew we'd performed well when he gave us a nod following a performance.
My condolences to his family.
