Reading this heartfelt and beautifully written obituary brought such a swell of emotion-especially seeing my own dad´s name mentioned. Thank you. It meant more than I can say.
The Drabings have felt like family. Your presence in our lives has been steady and true. And when my dad passed, you all showed up-not just with words, but with time, love, and care for my mom. That will stay with me forever.
I´ll never forget the time I broke my ankle, which my dad x-rayed at his clinic, then handed me off to John, who casted it while I sat on mom´s washing machine. he later operated on that ankle as well as my thumb, which I managed to break initially in Breckenridge, and then again while casted and running up the stairs.
I even remember getting a call from my dad in 1986 when I was living in Spain, recovering from yet another bike accident. My dad laughed and said, "John was just saying that if you could go one more week, it´ll be a full year without breaking anything." That kind of teasing, gentle care stuck with me.
Losing John so soon after my dad is hard. It feels like they each carried a part of the other, and now that they´re both gone, something bigger is missing. But I like to picture them together again-raising their eyebrows, shaking their heads, maybe smiling a little at all the ways we still manage to keep things messy and meaningful down here.
Sending all my love to his family and Doris.
