Kathi Walko Obituary

After courageously battling cancer for 5 years, Kathi Linn Walko, age 53, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2009 and entered into eternal life with her Lord and Savior. The Colorado Springs trees that day were decorated with frost in her honor as St. Valentine was recruiting and God was looking for a full time gardener in Heaven. She was a true “Colorado kid and was born in Julesburg, CO to Edward and Evelene Pickernell on April 12, 1955. After marrying her husband, Bruce, on Jun 29, 1974, she spent 23 years as a military wife, living in various locations around the world including Spain, Germany, Florida, California and Mississippi, but called Colorado Springs home since 1993. Finally able to stay in one place, she attended college and was awarded with an Associates degree in Interior Design in 1997. Kathi was a self-taught landscape artist and spent countless hours designing, landscaping, and nurturing the lovely gardens around her home. Her inspiration, love, and compassion will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Bruce Walko, son Christopher Walko, daughter Shonna (Jeramie Miles) Walko, and grand-daughter Kaia Miles, all of Colorado Springs; her brother Edward (Debbie Gruber) Pickernell of Tustin, CA; mother Evelene Pickernell, sister Kelli Shoemaker, nephew Curtis Shoemaker, and niece Bailey Shoemaker, all of Greeley, CO. Kathi was preceded in death by father Edward and her brother Gregory. Inurnment will be held at 1 PM on Monday, February 23rd at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado. Pastor Mike Williams, who originally performed Kathi and Bruce’s marriage, will perform the services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

Kathi was a wonderful friend. She wrote me several times a year, even when I did not write back. She shared her faith and love for God always. She encouraged me often in my faith. I know she is with her Lord and Savior this day and singing with the angels. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and I have had the honor of calling her my friend.
Love, Ann
