To the Foater Family,
I'm so sorry to read of Marguerite's death. I knew of your wonderful wife, mother all of my life, because my parents were dear friends of hers, and Margo and Herb. I have a picture of me hanging in my home of me, painted by Margo. Our families were very close and enjoyed the Mission Valley Hunt and many other social events together. My mother, Josephine Stubbs, passed away in 2006, but I think of your family often. Please accept my deepest sympathy.
Sincerely, Stephanie Stubbs Tinsley, Sun City West, Az

Dear Charlie,
My thoughts are with you. Your mom was a spunky wonan - delightful on so many levels! She will be missed.
Always,

The City of Mission Hills, Kansas sends their condolences for the loss of such a fine woman and true philanthropist. I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Foster on a trip to the East Coast in 2001 and was able to personally thank her for her families contribution to the quality of life in our city. Peetwood Park is a charming arboretum that beautifies our city as does the historic Peet home.

Marguerite P. Foster lived an active, abundant life dedicated to learning and teaching. She seamlessly interwove her interests in science and the arts and selflessly shared her personal and family resources to support these activities in all of the communities which she called home.
I met her in the latter years of her life when she and her son, Adam, were considering the construction and then ,the renovation of the Peetwood Pavilion for Environmental Science at the State Arboretum of Virginia. Her generous gifts to the Arboretum have touched the lives of many students and teachers and will continue to do so for many generations. Her joy of life, devotion to learning, and generosity will always be an inspiration to me. My life has been blessed by knowing Marguerite.

If I'd never met Margo Foster, I might never have known of the C & O Canal Association. I shudder to think how confined my life might have been. She was the proud alumnae of a women's college. My daughter had applied for admission to that same college. Margo held a tea party one Spring afternoon to persuade such young women that they were special and that they should be in that very special college. I think they wanted to sure that some competitor college didn't snatch up these very bright youngsters. During conversation at that tea party, Margo complained that she'd had to interrupt the Through-Hike in order to host the party. When I asked what is a Through Hike, I got a concise but intriguing answer. The Through Hike is, of course, the two-week-long Springtime hike sponsored by the C & O Canal Association to commemorate the 1954 challenge by Supreme Court Justice Douglas to The Washington Post editors and other opinion-shapers regarding the future of the C & O Canal. The challenge was to walk the length of the towpath with him. Margo said a most unusual thing: that walking on the towpath hour after hour is so boring and so hard on leg muscles that she sometimes walked backwards or sideways just for the variety. I thought that if she was typical of members of the Association (smart, well educated, and quirky), I'd like to learn more. So I joined and went on the Heritage Hike that Fall. Margo was not there, but two women whom I'd known only through business were. We walked together and dined together, and I never looked back. Apart from that meeting, I think I never met Margo again. But I've always remembered her, and wish that I'd known her.
