Rex LeRoy Johnson passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 in Colorado Springs. Rex was 97 years old. He was born on February 8th, 1924, in Smith Center, Kansas to Mildred Amelia and Roy Allen Johnson.



Rex proudly served in the U S Army in World War II as a tanker. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge.



Upon his return from World War II, Rex married the love of his life, Edith Johnson (Holbrook) in 1946.



He worked construction though out the state of Colorado and ended up in Colorado Springs at Rocky Mountain Paving, running the local crews. He was proud to be a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No.9.



Rex was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Edith Johnson; his dearly missed son Larry Allen; and his siblings. They are all together again. He is survived by his brother, Dick Johnson.



Rex was best known for his witty humor, his laughter, his contagious smile, and the genuine love he had for his family. His family was his world. He was the kind of person everyone wanted to be around, the life of the party, the light in sadness and hard times. He was loved and admired by everyone he met. Rex was a gentle, loving, kind and generous man. He was truly a one-of-a-kind soul.



Rex is survived by his daughters, Elena Mae Heid (Bob) and Rita Kay Browning (Mike); his granddaughters Michelle Dotson (Dave), Cassandra Johnson (Jeff), Leanna Grahl, Wendi Brothers (Mike), and Heidi Crippen (Troy). He has 13 great grandchildren and 15 great, great grandchildren.



Services for Rex will be held on Thursday, July 22 at Blunt Mortuary, 2229 W. Colorado Avenue. The visitation will be 12:00 p.m., and the funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Colorado Springs. A reception at Blunt Mortuary will follow the burial.
