Robert Mollo Obituary

Robert Blair Mollo, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully in his Colorado Springs home on January 21, 2016, at the age of 86. Bob was born in Waterman Pennsylvania on September 22, 1929 to Daniel and Rose Mollo.

Bob began establishing his amazing work ethic, compassion for others, and scholastic drive while growing up in a hard working coal mining town in Pennsylvania. As Bob proceeded to achieve early success in his own work and school endeavors, he still found the time to concern himself with the needs his large family. At a young age he started his own painting business and later he worked nights in a paper mill to put himself through Indiana State Teacher's College. After graduation, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force.

Bob had a long and distinguished flying career that included extensive tours of duty during the Korean and Viet-Nam wars.

Early in Bob's military career he married high school sweetheart Ann Miller. While Bob began establishing his young family he also was able to utilize his military benefits to further his education. He attended Stanford University and obtained his Master of Science Degree. Later after his transfer to Michigan, he enrolled and graduated from the University of Michigan with a PhD.

Subsequent to his retirement from the Air Force after 26 years, Bob utilized his education in his positions as a nuclear physicist and Senior Vice President of BDM Corporation in Los Alamos, NM.

After his retirement from BDM, Bob made his home in Colorado Springs. A few years later, Bob lost Ann in a tragic car accident.

He began to focus on his extensive philanthropic work which included Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Penrose Hospital, Fine Arts Center, Rotary International, Bear Creek Nature Center, and First Presbyterian Church. Bob earned many special distinctions including Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Honorary Lifetime Director, FAC Living Treasure Award, Rotary Service Citation and Deacon at First Presbyterian.

Bob married Judy Ann Cole in 1990, and together they enjoyed church activities, entertaining, their loving pets and traveling with close friends. Judy was at Bob's side as he departed this world for Heaven.

Bob was preceded in death by sons Michael and Keith, and siblings Nicholas, Victoria, Angeline, Charles, James and Gloria. Bob is survived by wife Judy, sons Mark and Paul (Connie), brothers Richard and Daniel, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A celebration of Bob's life is scheduled for Friday, January 29, at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 219 East Bijou Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Colorado Springs CO 80906.

Unfortunately our paths did not cross very often, but the few times they did were very enjoyable and memorable. I feel very fortunate for the few opportunities we did meet. Uncle Bob clearly lived life to the fullest, accomplished a lot, and did many great works. He realized the American dream. I sincerely believe he made the world a better place. Rest in peace Uncle Bob. Our prayers are with you.

I have had the privilege of working for Bob and Judy at their home as a gardener for the past five years.
During this time I was also lucky enough to get to know Bob as a mentor and beloved friend.
He taught me something about my own passion, gardening, every time I was with him.
I loved him for all that he had to share with me and others. He was certainly a wealth of knowledge.
Bob And Judy warmly welcomed my kids and I to join them for some unforgettable times.
I feel so greatful to have know Bob, I just wish I had know him longer. May you rest in peace my friend.

The few times I met Jeanne's Uncle Bob seem to standout in my memory - so much of what he had to say was so interesting! Even after 20 years I feel I could keep a slat water aquarium in great shape and interact with a gorilla without being pummeled. How many people do you know that can share that kind of information? A gifted man who used all his gifts to help others. I will always consider him a great man to emulate!

Because of the span between my brother Bob's age and distance, we had few times together. These times were memorable and enlightening. I admired Bob for his intelligence, abilities and accomplishments. He was a kind, compassionate,
and giving man. His generosity to our family will never be forgotten. Bob's memory will live on in our hearts. Our prayers are with Judy and family.

I want to take this time to thank you, Judy for asking Right At Home to come into your home and care for Bob. He was a joy to listen to and I could tell you was the rainbow in his heart. He beamed when he looked at you. Your last few hours together were treasures to behold. You will be together again one day.

Bob was our very first male docent at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. He enjoyed the challenge of working with all the "arty" women and school children. He had outstanding leadership skills and we all benefited from his expertise. It was an honor to know Bob and appreciate his winning smile.

My brother Bob was my mentor and a guiding light for the entire Mollo family. His dedication and love of learning inspired all to seek excellence in their academic and life work. After a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force Colonel Mollo was an inspirational teacher at the Air Force Academy and other universities, always helping his students to excel. His life will continue to be a beacon for all. Our prayers are with Bob and Judy Mollo in this time of great sorrow.

Bob was an amazing man. He had accomplished so many things, traveling all over the world. His philanthropy is legendary; so many organizations benefited from his generosity. But Bob was always careful to give credit where credit was due, to God His Father. Any provision, protection, or gift came straight from God, as Bob would say. Now he is in his heavenly home and at peace. We'll miss you, dear friend, but look forward to seeing you again!
