Robert Walters died unexpectedly on October 8, 2021. Bob was a local Native born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO. His family goes back to 1885 in Colorado.
He attended and graduated from Coronado High School, and earned his Associates Degree in Welding at Pikes Peak Community College. He retired from School District 11, He worked in his younger years at "The Castaways" restaurant in Manitou and was the Manager of Furrs Cafeteria Uintah Gardens.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert & Barbara Walters, grandparents Ralph & Marie Walters, and his beloved great grandfather John Manick (Manyik). He is survived by his Godson Levi Livingston, Mason & Brenn Livingston, Matt & Melissa Raney, nephew Kyle Gray, and John & Wetendorf.
Bob epitomized the phrase "one of a kind". He was known by friends and family as Rob, Robbie, Bob, Biker Bob, Walschez, and Uncle Bob". He loved his country, his state, his town, his neighborhood. He loved every aspect of nature. And contrary to popular belief, he also loved and cared for many people.
His animals were his children and he loved them dearly. (Mo, Bosco, Sewate, Diablo) Every conversation started with some funny story about how one of his kids either tore something up or knocked him to the ground, or just flat out wouldn't listen to him. He loved his neighbors animals as well and they were always so excited to see and play with Bob.
He retired from School Distict 11 after over 40 years of service, with many awards. Even though he was retired, Bob was always busy doing something. If he wasn't hanging out with Matt, he was mowing down the 1/8th of an inch of new growth on his perfectly manicured lawn, painting nature scenes on canvas (which he taught himself to do, by watching a Bob Ross video one weekend), repairing something that had broken in the yard or house, or listening to offensive music at the highest decibel possible, to force people to leave the park that appeared to be up to no good.
Bob supported the local businesses, from the restaurants & bars, down to the local trash company. He rode to Susie's Cafe for breakfast. He would magically develop an accent when either enjoying any ethnic food or when speaking with someone that had an accent of their own. And while he claimed that he was not aware of this, it occurred every, single time. But there was never any ill intent, it was part of his charm.
He would always tell crazy stories about when he worked at the school, but he enjoyed every minute. He loved the children and always talked about making sure they were safe. One student always called him Stone Cold, because he thought he looked like Stone Cold Steve Austin one of his favorite wrestlers. Even after his retirement he continued to make sure the street and park were clean and safe.
Bob also loved that he was Levi's Godfather. He'd always tell Matt stories and show pictures that Mason had shared with him, and would do it with the biggest smile on his face. He was so proud that he was The Godfather and wore it as a badge of honor. Levi, Mason, and Brenn were his family and he spoke about them constantly. His face would always light up when Mason called and he heard, "What's up battle buddy?" come through the phone.
We know Bob loved his yard, but he also loved growing flowers, fruits and vegetables. He had an obsession with black roses and black hollyhocks. And while he never could seem to get them to flower, he tried every season from seed.
Bob also had a bee hive for a short time. With Cathy's help, he learned how to care for the bees and have them produce honey. And while this project was short lived he loved that he and Cathy had this in common and worked together to maintain the hive.
Matt and Melissa had the pleasure of Bob performing the ceremony when they renewed their wedding vows. It was a perfect evening, even in the 20 degree weather. They wouldn't have it any other way and it wouldn't have felt right without him.
Bob was a master of many things and lived his life on his own terms. We truly believe having died twice before, he embraced every moment as if it was his last. He lived alone his whole life but still loved everything outside of himself with all that he was. He was generous, loyal, caring, gracious, and protective. He was the best neighbor, friend, and brother anyone could wish for, he will be missed everyday and we are all grateful for all of the joyful, crazy moments spent together. He was a kind hearted generous man.
Bob – There will always be a cold Honey Brown in the fridge, a seat for you by the fire or in the garage, and the music you loved playing in rotation on the stereo.
