Sandra Laxson Obituary

Sandra Kae (Saevig) Laxson was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Dorothe and Stanley (Stan) Saevig. She grew up in Colorado Springs and always had an interest in drawing. She went to Palmer High School, as did her mother, when it was known as Colorado Springs High School. Sandy is most fondly remembered as the girl with the beautiful smile. It was while at Palmer that she met the love of her life, John Laxson. They began dating on January 26, 1963 and were married on January 26, 1968. Sandy and John have two children, Todd (Ann), and Jennifer. Todd and Ann gave Sandy her first grandchild (and the most recent love of her life), Nicholas. Sandy loved the time she spent babysitting and spoiling Nicholas. After high school, Sandy went on to attend and get her degree in Graphic Design from The Colorado Institute of Art in Denver. Upon graduating, she began work at LooArt (now known as Current) for the Loo family. Sandy and John moved to Manitou Springs in 1974. In 1973, she was recruited to help with the new Commercial Art Program at (then), El Paso Community College (aka "Safeway tech"). Eventually Sandy led the program, as the college moved and changed its name to Pikes Peak Community College. It was at Pikes Peak (and EPCC) where she touched so many creative students and influenced their careers in design. She was beloved by her students who all found a friend in Sandy, as she'd take them under her wing. Sandy retired from teaching in 2004 and applied herself to a plethora of creative endeavors. Among them were pottery, weaving, and gem faceting. She was always finding new ways of expressing herself artistically, while inspiring those around her effervescent gravitational pull. Also in her retirement, she and John traveled often to her two most favorite destinations on Earth, Walt Disney World (Florida) and Hawaii, more often than not including Todd and Jen. Since December 2010, her life revolved around her grandson, Nicholas. On July, 4, 2011, Sandy had a massive stroke that left her severely physically debilitated and unable to speak. When their insurance stopped paying for physical and speech rehabilitation in December of 2011, John and family made the decision to move her to Costa Rica for more affordable, and what turned out to be better, healthcare. Her sunny smile endeared her to the caregivers where she lived until her passing. The family who operated the center immediately "adopted" Sandy as one of their own family and provided excellent quality of care, and more importantly, unending love and support for Sandy and John. John dedicated his entire life to her care since the stroke and filled her remaining time with unending love. Her loving husband, John, who held her in his arms as she left our world, survives Sandy. She is also survived by son, Todd Laxson, his wife Ann Caesar, and their son Nicholas; daughter, Jennifer Laxson; mother, Dorothe Saevig; sister, Linda (Earl) Hefflinger; many nieces and nephews; as well as cousins who adored and loved Sandy. Her many friends, students, and Costa Rican family are greatly saddened by the loss of such a lively, creative, funny, loving friend and mentor. Her father, Stan Saevig, and best friend, Linda Powell, preceded her in death. A service/celebration of life is pending and will be announced later for August or September. Sandy was so special in my eyes. Sandy glowed with the light of love and joy. She will be greatly missed. Her patience and understanding while she helped others was wonderful, she was an angel on earth.

I always remember Sandy with a big, warm smile. She truly exuded "love of life". As a special ed. teacher who "sent" students to her so she could teach them as part of the Area Vocational Program at Palmer, I was always amazed by her endless patience and kindness. There never was a student she couldn't reach. She was one lovely lady and one talented artist! She will be missed by many.

Sandy was always positive and supportive to others creating art at the Colorado Springs Senior Center. I can still hear her distinctive, enthusiastic voice speaking words of encouragement to myself and to others. She was very earnest with a truly good heart and a selfless nature. Bless her on her way and much comfort to family and friends.

John Laxson and Sandy Saevig were more than good friends to all of us at Palmer High School. I loved them both so very much. I am so very grateful to call them friends. I was so very fortunate to have known Todd, as well. I continue speechless with grief thinking of my own loss. I can only imagine what John and Todd must feel. May God bless John, Todd, Sandy's sister, Linda, and all family. I mourn my friends who gave all to everyone they knew. All Palmer High grieves Sandy's death. God's love shines bright because of John and Sandy's love for one another. Sandy star shines down on all of us.

My heart hurts in losing you. I know in my brain that you have been freed from your body's prison, but my heart still aches for all the remaining conversations we will not have anymore. You remain my very best friend forever and always. I love you, Sandy.

I knew Sandy for only a short time, but her family has become part of my family. One of her pieces of pottery always sits on my kitchen counter and I count myself blessed to have this piece of Sandy in our house. Love to all the Laxsons and extended family in this time of loss.

Sandy was one of my late wife Carol's best friends and staff members. Carol regarded her as a quality instructor with total dedication to her craft and students. A small piece of our hearts has been taken today. Love and prayers for John and kids.
