Sean O'Donnell Obituary

O'Donnell
Sean Christopher O'Donnell
January 7, 1956 - May 28, 2018
Sean O'Donnell, MD, beloved husband, father, family physician, and friend, passed away at home, May 28th. A Colorado Springs native, he graduated from Palmer High School in 1973 and obtained a Bachelor's degree from Colorado College in 1977. With a passion for medicine, Sean pursued a Master's Degree of Public Health from Baylor University. In 1982, he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado, and completed a residency in Family Practice Medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital, Denver. Sean served two years in the US Public Health Service Corps in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.
His legacy of caring for patients, families, and the community began in 1987. A year later, he and his wife, Cathy, opened a family medicine practice in the heart of Colorado Springs. Dr. O'Donnell transcended the best of good clinical practice, engaging in the art of medicine with compassion, patience and diligent care. His treatment extended beyond the examination room, as he created a community healthy in mind and body.
Sean married the love of his life, Cathy Wilson, in 1982. Together they raised a loving and adventurous family. Imagine skiing, hiking with llamas, single track biking, backpacking, summiting mountaintops, scuba diving and travels near and far. Closer to home, extended family holiday celebrations were treasured. Sean loved his family and embraced fatherhood.
Dr. O'Donnell believed in serving his community. The breadth of his service to the community included care for adults with Developmental Disabilities at Cheyenne Village, served as assistant director of Pikes Peak Hospice, team physician for Colorado College hockey and football teams and physician for US Olympic Training Center.
Sean was chosen as the 83rd member of the AdAmAn Club in 2001. The friendships and camaraderie celebrating the New Year with fireworks on the summit of Pikes Peak were a great joy.
There has been no finer friend, father or physician to the Colorado Springs community. His legacy continues through the family members that survive him; his wife, Cathy Wilson-O'Donnell; his children, Blake Patrick O'Donnell, Tyler Wilson O'Donnell, and Sean Casey O'Donnell, and Julie Johnny-Hair; his grandsons, Cyrus and Zack Hair; siblings, Suzanne Schutt, James O'Donnell, and Sheila Griffith; and cherished nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00a.m. Saturday, June 2 at Shove Chapel on the Colorado College campus, 1010 North Nevada Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, please make a gift in the name of Sean O'Donnell to support cancer research at the University of Colorado Foundation, PO Box 17126, Denver, CO 80217 or giving.cu.edu/SeanODonnell.

Dr. O´Donnell was one of a kind. He listened, no referral needed. He was my doctor and my son for 30yrs, took good care of our health. It took a few difficult years to find a good caring doctor like him.

I think of Dr. O´Donnell quite often and miss him and the kind of doctor he was. If you had a problem he dealt with it. No referrals if possible because he could do it all. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful doctor.

I still miss Sean immensly, especially this time of year. I remember when he was Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's day parade.... He was smiling from ear to ear! About 10 years ago I was getting into mug sublimation and made him an Irish mug. He was thrilled! I could always leave the doctor's office smiling because his love for life just shined thru in everything he did. My heart aches for his loss and it aches for Cathy and all his friends and family. He was the same age as my brother, who passed away in 2003. Sean helped see me thru his passing, my Dad and my Mom. I hope he's dancing an Irish jig with my Irish Mom! It was said that she so desperately wanted me to be born on March 17, St. Patrick's day that she did a jig to help induce labor. Being the stubborn child I was, I didn't arrive until the 19th! He got a laugh out of that story when I told it to him! May your Irish Eyes be smiling down upon us! My heart felt love and respect to Cathy and family on his upcoming first anniversary.

Dear Cathy, I am saddened to learn just today of Sean's passing. The last time we saw him was when Jackson hurt his knee on a trampoline. Sean said he never liked those things. I had missed seeing him and missed him all together when he retired...I had no idea he had been ill. My love to you and your family. We count ourselves lucky to have been friends with Sean.

Started out as my work comp dr in the 90's. Immediately comfortable when I asked a question, he said he did not know, and together we looked up the answer in a medical book. He immediately became my primary care dr. Live out of state now, work in healthcare and no dr has come close to being real, genuine, caring as this man. My sympathies to the O'Donnell family. Healing thoughts.

I'm still in a state of disbelief at the passing of Dr. O. He was mine and my wife's physician since the early 90's. As well as my mom and brother and a few friends. He was at the hospital every day for the last week of my mother's life with his extraordinary care and comfort. He was not only a caring compassionate physician, but a very brilliant one! I'm sure he was not deservingly recognized as that by many, only because he was such a humble soul. To his family, my sincere sympathy and prayers. I promise you that he will never be forgotten by me or my family.

Dr. Odonnell was my doctor for over 20 years. He was one of the last private practice doctors who actually wanted to keep his practice at a personal level. He will be missed.

Michelle Holton

June 19, 2018

He was my doctor (when I would actually go to a doctor;) for many years. He was what you would imagine a doctor to be, someone who genuinely loved and cared for all of his patients with a calming, compassionate bedside manner who would go above and beyond for all those entrusted to his care. Colorado Springs has lost a gentle soul and great man who will be greatly missed.
As an RN, I have worked with many doctors over the years, none compared to Dr. Sean O'Donnell. May peace and comfort be with his family, friends, coworkers, patients and all that loved him. The good words spoken about him in the Legacy book are a testament of the man he was.
I will truly miss him!!!

Dr. O'Donnell I shall miss you. To his family my heart goes out to you all. I began seeing Sean in the early 90s and on more than one occasion he would come by the hospital to check on me after an operation. But beyond his care and treatment for me he was a wonderful fellow, full of stories and always willing to listen to mine. Again, I shall miss Sean.

June 10, 2018

To Cathy & Dr O'Donnell's family we extend our deepest sympathies. Our family is devastated for you. We were blessed to have Sean has our family doctor for 24 years. I always said if he left town we would have to move to follow his practice. I guess we will have to wait a bit on that one. Doc was the most caring physician I have ever come across. Also so skilled. He was always spot on with his diagnosis. He showed up a few times unexpectedly at the hospital for us, he called to check on us after certain conditions. He literally helped us raise our two boys with care and advice. We had many laughs together and a few tears. The last time we saw him in early April- right after he retired- we were blessed to find him in the office to have that last conversation. He was taken much to quick from this earth. But God always takes the good ones. He must have needed a personal physician. RIP Doc - you will be dearly missed by this family. PS: go climb a big cloud mountain!!

My heart aches when I heard Dotor Sean O'Donnells passing, I had followed Cinthia Jordon when she started working for Dr. O'Donnell and I will never forget him for all he has done for me, the first time I had met him I was surprised and taken away do to the fact he had came to see me while I was in the hospital years ago with instructions to follow after my release, so after Dr. O'Donnell had left, I said to myself Doctors still come and see there patients anymore? since then I had the highest and upmost respect for him. Through the years he has done so much to improve my health and I truly thank him for that and just a few weeks ago I was having problems and again had helped me. When I received a letter in the mail of his retirement and condition I was blown away and just heard of his passing yesterday I could not believe it, Doctor Sean O'Donnell I thank you for all you have done for my family and myself you will be missed! R.I.P.

I was so saddened to hear of Dr. O'Donnell's passing. Gone much to soon. As a nurse I had to call him many times @all hours of the day & night, while on vacation, while @Bronco games....but never a cross word did I hear. He always listened, even took my advise...so rare. I always looked forward to St. Patty's Day and his basket of Irish goodies!!! He will be missed by so many. My heart goes out most especially to his family but also to all those for whom he loved and cared.

June 8, 2018

In this day and age of computer interface and mass production of patients in and out like an assembly line Dr. O'Donnell was a throwback to care one on one. It was my privilege to have had such a fine physician for my care. He truly listened and cared for the medical needs and was concerned for everyone who walked in the door of his office. Thank you sir for a job well done.

June 7, 2018

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dr O'Donnell! When my son called to tell me that he had been informed of Doc's cancer by a staff member, we cried together but then found comfort in reminiscing about some of the laughs we shared over the 26 years. Doc had such a funny sense of humor. When I asked him once to check a mole, he informed me that it was harmless but that if I were to "scratch it off on a fence, it would bleed a lot." This is just one of the many times he made us laugh.
We were fortunate to have been treated by him for so many years. He did so much good during his life. He truly made the world a better place and will be missed. My heart goes out to his family and staff. You are all in my prayers.

Cathy, I've just learned of Sean's passing, or I would have been at the service! What a man he was. Lately I've been remembering his care for my family, the best we could possibly have wanted. His presence, his thoughtfulness in considering each situation with fresh attention, his willingness and ability to truly listen, his generosity of spirit that was unspoken but just shining through, all were rare qualities. You know that he, and you two as a team, have made a big difference in the lives and the life of this community. And my heart is full for you and the kids with this very hard loss.

This wonderful man was my friend, neighbor, and physician. I knew him my whole life and took my kids to see him. My husband and I are beyond heartbroken. Words cannot express how grateful I am to Dr. O'Donnell for the excellent care he provided me and my family over the years. We have been patients of his since we moved to Colorado in 2009, and I am so thankful that we found him. He was a doctor that never lost his bedside manner and always showed empathy, compassion and a smile. We have lost a true friend who did a lot of good in this world. He made me believe that there are still some good people out there. I remember when I was really sick four years ago and Dr. O'Donnell called me at home that evening to let me know that I needed to head to the emergency room immediately. Without him (I never would have gone) and probably would not have received the life-saving transfusion I so desperately needed. He was so instrumental in helping my husband who suffers from MS and he would always come home after his appointments with Doc feeling very encouraged and ready to continue the battle. He was always willing to listen to our crazy stories, not pertaining to anything medical and always shared personal stories of his. He has touched so many lives. I remember a few weeks ago talking to our Pharmacist (who was also a patient of Dr. O'Donnell) and she told me how he helped her daughter during her battle with cancer and was instrumental in helping her through the grieving process. She said that when she received the letter from his office about his retirement that she just became so upset and angry because it just seemed so unfair that someone like him, who truly cares for his patients and was a gift to this earth, would be gone so soon. My heart aches for Cathy, his children and the rest of his family. I am so happy I had the chance to know such a great, compassionate and caring human being. He was truly a wonderful person that will be missed by many.

Not only was he my doctor but he served as a father figure and someone to talk to for advice over the years. He took care of all 3 of my boys since birth and i couldn't have asked for a more caring compassionate and professional being to do so. You were one in a million Doc and will be greatly missed. My prayers are with your family now during this tough time. Love you all

I'm beyond heartbroken. Sean was my doctor for 20 years. He's laughed with me, seen me thru good times and bad. He cried with me when I lost my brother, father and mother. I have never had such a loving, caring and compassionate physician in my life who truly cared. I would look forward to seeing him to tell him different things that were happening in my life. He wasn't just a doctor, he was a friend. I not only grieve for him, but the loss for the community and his beloved family. His laugh, his smile and his proud Irish heritage. I once made him a coffee mug for St. Patrick's Day. Human words can not describe the heartbrake that I am feeling. Keeping Sean, his beloved family and the community in my heart, thoughts and prayers.
