On October 23, Vernon Lamar Cole, known as Lamar to those close to him, passed away at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Dalton, Georgia, he was the first person in his family to graduate from college. He put himself through school by working in Dalton's carpet mills and, after seven years, received a degree in history. He subsequently moved to the Washington, D.C. area where he made a career in computer programming, met his wife, and started a family. He had a broad spectrum of knowledge that amazed those around him. He once impressed friends from the Netherlands by picking up a Dutch-language magazine and translating it, despite never having studied the language.
He is survived by his wife Deborah and sons Daniel and David of Colorado Springs and son Michael of Turin, Italy, as well as by his brother Gary Cole, sisters Brenda Carden and Kaye Henderson, all of Georgia, and a vast extended family.
Of all his accomplishments, Lamar was proudest of his family. He loved them and they loved him.
His funeral service was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Security, Colorado, on November 6, and he was interred at Evergreen Cemetery.
