Walter Brooks Obituary

Walter "Wally" Brooks has passed away at the age of 89. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey to Rose and Louis Schoenbrun, immigrants from Hungary. When he was very young Walter began collecting stamps and by age nine became an entrepreneur, buying and selling stamps from around the world. He built his first house when he was just 17 and went on to develop a home-building company which constructed more than 600 houses in Colorado Springs. During World War II Walter was an Air Force Captain. While stationed in Pueblo, Colorado he met his future bride, Harriet Goodman. They were married for 62 years living in New York, Pueblo and Colorado Springs. Walter Brooks was active in many civic groups including Kiwanis International as a member more than 50 years serving as Pikes Peak Club president and lieutenant governor of the Rocky Mountain District, twice honored as a George Hixson International Fellow. He was vice president of Temple Shalom and president of Civic Theater. After Walter graduated from Colorado College he and his wife actively supported the college becoming founders of the Friends of Tutt Library and founding board members for the southwest studies program. He was a supporter of UCCS establishing the Walter and Harriet Brooks Scholarship Foundation and also served on the board of directors at Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife Harriet, children Mark (Terry Samuel) and Judy (Lee) Frank and three grandchildren, Asher Frank and Aaron and Estee Brooks. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 11 AM at Sons of Israel/Evergreen Cemetery, 105 South Hancock, Colorado Springs with concluding service and reception at Temple Beit Torah. The Shoenbruns were our next door neighbors when I was growing up in Colorado Springs, and Mark was my schoolmate at Audubon and Wasson. We used to enjoy receiving Mr. Brooks's humor-filled holiday letter every year. My deepest condolences to the family.

Our deepest condolences to you and your family, Harriet. Walter was such a fixture for us here in our neighborhood---I thought fondly of him and his ready smile each time I walked the dogs and saw the newspapers outside your house. My sincere sympathies and wishes for the Peace that Passeth All Understanding to be upon you all .during this difficult time.

Mr. Brooks was a customer of Ackley's Rocks and Stamps for years, and when I would see him from the door, in the parking lot, I would open the door for him, and we greeted each other.
It's been over 2 and a half years since I have worked at Ackley's, but I have fond memories of Mr. Brooks through all the years that I had known him, and he truly will be missed by many.
God Bless You, Mr. Brooks!!
I always enjoyed your smiling face and calm demeanor!

Judy, my thoughts are with you and yours at this sad time. What a great man your father was.

March 28, 2011

With my Dad gone I knew I could always turn to Walter to ask any questions about the family and what it was like growing up together. I still remember the story he told me that the only reason my dad got hot food was because Aunt Rose cooked and Walter passed it across the driveway. Walter was a gentle soul who has always been a part of my life. I will miss him. May you all be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Yerushalayim, Cousin Marcia
