William Hudson Obituary

William H. Hudson was born to Denver and Anna Jessie Stillwell Hudson on July 9, 1930, at his grandparents' home in the small rural town of Perry, Missouri. He grew up an only child in Mexico, Missouri, the product of a happy childhood and earnest instruction in the virtues of trustworthiness, self-discipline and hard work. bill early exhibited leadership traits that were to lead him from small responsibilities to large. When he was twelve he was awarded a Kiwanis scholarship to attend Camp Minnetonka in Michigan. The camp was an arm of the American Youth Foundation, an organization that even today encourages young people to "strive to do their personal best." that experience had a lasting influence on his life. Later Bill became an Eagle Scout and served two summers on the staff of Philmont, the national Boy Scout ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Again in Mexico, Missouri, he was honored to be selected Mayor for the Day by the city; he graduated from Mexico High School in 1948. At Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bill took active roles in governing his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, and participating in ROTC. Bill graduated from the university with a physics degree in 1952 and left that summer for Wonju, Korea, where he was communications officer for the 519th Military Police Battalion. The conflict having been over for many months, Bill, having satisfied his ROTC requirements, returned to a position at Corning Glass, Corning, N.Y. and marriage to Patricia, June 8, 1954, in Pittsburgh. Bill eventually worked thirty-three years for Corning. At different times in his career Bill was manager, Electronic Products, president of Sovirel (Corning's largest subsidiary, located in Paris, France), senior vice president and general manager, Technical Products, president of the consumer and Industrial group and assistant to the Chairman. At the time of his retirement and move to Colorado Springs in 1986, bill was president of the Glass and Ceramics Group and a member of the board of Directors. In Colorado Springs Bill created Colorado Springs Total Quality Partnership. He served for many years on the boards of Analytical Surveys and the Space Foundation; Bill later became president of the World Affairs Council and was a member of the Pikes Peak Community College Advisory Board. He was a faithful and active member of the Broadmoor Community Church since 1987. Bill leaves behind Pat, his wife of 56 years, and their three children: Anne Hudson McDavid (Raven) and grandchildren Patrick, Megan and Ian of the Springs; son Mark Henry Hudson (Christine) and grandchildren Sylvie and Claire of the Springs; daughter Carolyn Ethington of Salt Lake City and grandchildren Eric, Kristi, Madelyn and Steven. Services at the Broadmoor Community Church will be announced at a later date. Contributions in Bill's name may be made to the Senior Pilgrim Youth Fellowship, Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Avenue, Colorado Springs, Co., 80906.

Dear Pat and family,

My condolences and deepest sympathy to you on the passing of Bill. I did not know him well, but in reading the obituary it is clear that he lived his life fully and well. You will miss him greatly, as I miss my lifetime partner, but you can celebrate his life and be thankful for many wonderful memories. You can also look to the years ahead – years of significance as you follow your own calling and invest in the lives of your family.

I have found great comfort in the Lord’s presence each day, and pray that will be your experience as well.

I am out of town this week so I will probably not be able to attend the services, but you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
