Barbara Slack Obituary

Barbara Jean Slack, 75, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1959, died on June 19, 2006, after enduring a grievous yet valiant struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on January 19, 1931 to Verne C. and Marian (Hansen) Haugness in Omaha, NE. As a child, she lived briefly in Colorado Springs, during which time she attended Steel School. After moving back to Omaha, she graduated from Benson High School and was proud to be a Benson Bunny! She graduated from Omaha University in 1952 with a degree in Education. While in college, Barb belonged to the Chi Omega Sorority. She was very involved in the "O.U. Players," playing leading roles in several productions. Barbara married her college sweetheart, Thomas W. Slack, on December 21, 1952 in Omaha, NE. After teaching first grade in Omaha for three years, she chose to stay home and nurture the family she loved. Upon moving to Colorado Springs in 1959, she joined First Presbyterian Church where she faithfully served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Get Set Volunteer and Bible study leader. She was active in Bible Study Fellowship, was a member of Sons of Norway, worked many local elections and was a Soup Kitchen volunteer. Barb was preceded in death by her parents, her infant daughter and her grandson, Ethan Marting. Survivors include her loving husband of 54 years, Dr. Thomas W. Slack; four children: Linda Slack, of Pueblo, CO; Thomas E. (Laurie) Slack, Lisa (Sean) Marting, Steve Slack (Fiance, Elise Strickland) and five grandchildren: Cori (Matthew) Wroten, Andrea (Aaron) Boyles, Kaylen Slack, Emma Marting and Tory Marting. A Memorial Service will be held on July 20 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 219 East Bijou St., Colorado Springs, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Get-Set Preschool Program at First Presbyterian Church. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Dear Dr's Slack, Lisa and family. We have known each other as long as I can remember and I always remember Mrs. Slack smiling constantly, and having so much love for all of those around her. Our prayers are with you at this most difficult of times.

I am so very sorry for your loss, but know that Barb has finally won her fight and is dancing and singing in Heaven! It is such a blessing to keep close the memories of your mom (and wife) and know that you will all see her again. I know she will watch over all of you! God Bless and know that the whole family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I, personally, will always cherish my memories with Barb and your Dad! I have been blessed to know your family!

God Bless

Tom and family,

I was so sorry to read about Barbara's passing. I remember what a lovely lady she was when we were neighbors, oh so many years ago, in Security. She is in a more peaceful place now. God bless you all!

Your mom will be truly missed. She was a wonderful woman. It was a pleasure assisting her and your father still at Brighton Gardens.

My warmest wishes for the days you will mourn her loss.
