Red and I were close friends and neighbors for over 20 years. I often referred to him as The Old Fart, even though he was two months younger. He never failed to remind me that he was, The Youngster!.
We shared common interests in computers, software, photography, travel, and cars. We were both do-it-yourself type guys and such was the case when I needed to replace my garage door opener. At the time we were both beer drinkers which occasionally got in the way of doing things correctly? It only took two days for us to assemble the new opener, another day to remove the old one, and a 4th day to install everything. Red installed the remote switch on the inside garage wall, and the outside access controller, both at a 10-degree angle from level.
My car, a Corvette, needed a front turn signal bulb replaced, which was in a very difficult area to reach. As I struggled with the installation, the headlight door closed, trapping my arm and preventing any possibility of reaching the control button to re-open the headlight door. I waved to anyone passing by for help, and they all waved back. Red finally came over and released me, offering to try and install the bulb himself. He dropped it somewhere in the engine compartment, never to be found again. Then he said with a big grin, Give it a try maybe it will work anyway?. Ya' gotta love this guy!
One of our favorite activities was to sit around a table in my garage, looking out on our neighborhood, discussing/solving the problems of the world. As summer dwindled and cold weather set in, he encouraged me to have a fire pit installed in my 3-car driveway so we could keep warm. Although we knew it was out of the question, we argued at length as to who was going to pay for it. Not to say that Red was cheap, maybe frugal would be more descriptive, but I'm convinced he tracked every penny he ever spent!
I will forever miss my friend Red. I'm sure he's looking down upon all of us, wishing he were here to redesign whatever we might be doing?
