John Hayes Obituary

John Hayes passed away on August 5, 2013. John was born in St Louis, Missouri, on November 23, 1924 to parents John and Vivian (Vilbert) Hayes. At age 16 he entered Washington University in St. Louis on an academic scholarship, the first member of his family to attend college. His Washington University education ended when he entered the Army during World War II. He was sent to the University of Michigan to learn Japanese and served as a translator during the War. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in June 1945. He remained a lifelong scholar and avid reader. John and the former Norma V. Blackwell were married in St. Louis on April 14, 1948. John was active in church activities including visitation and teaching Sunday School, and serving as a baseball and softball coach for his children's teams. John worked at McCourtney-Breckenridge, an investment banking firm in St. Louis for over 50 years as a stockbroker and corporate officer. John and Norma moved to Colorado Springs in 2000 to be near their children and grandchildren. John was a member of Sunrise United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Norma; his son John (Carolee) Hayes of Denver; his daughter Patricia (Richard) Nashleanas of Colorado Springs; four grandchildren and four great-children. He will be interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery following a private family service. John Hayes lived an exemplary life. An intensely proud and private person, he used his talents quietly, without pretense, to benefit his family and his community. He was greatly loved and admired, and he will be profoundly missed. Contributions in lieu of flowers to Pikes Peak Hospice.
