Thomas Slack Obituary

THOMAS WILLIAM SLACK, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1959, passed away quietly on December 29th, 2013. He was born on December 7th, 1929 to Carroll L. and Isola M. (Moss) Slack in Rock Port, Missouri. He graduated from Central High School in Omaha, NE and attended Omaha University where he met his college sweetheart, Barbara Jean Haugness. The two were married December 21st, 1952.

After serving in the Army, Tom followed in the footsteps of his father and uncle by pursuing a career in Dentistry. He attended the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry. Upon graduation in 1959, Tom and Barb moved to Colorado Springs, CO where he began his dental practice.

During his dental career, Dr. Slack volunteered many hours to organized dentistry; he was president of the Colorado Springs Dental Society, president of the Colorado Dental Association, and president of American College of Dentists. He provided free dental care to San Luis Valley residents, Vietnamese refugees, Silver Key senior citizens, and to other people in need. Dr. Slack spent several years teaching clinical dentistry at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. He strived for excellence in his work and in all his endeavors.

He was a member of the Security Lion's Club, was very active in the Republican Party and served on the Widefield District 3 School Board.

Tom was involved in many ways at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, CO. He was an elder, an usher, a youth leader, and a Sunday school teacher. He also led a Young Life club for Widefield High School students.

Tom's greatest love was for his family with whom he ventured out on many memorable camping trips, ski trips and jeeping misadventures. His close companions throughout his adult life were his beloved German Shepherds.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara, brother and sister, infant daughter, and infant grandson. Survivors include four children: Linda C. Slack, Dr. Thomas D. (Laurie) Slack, Lisa C. (Sean) Marting, and Steve E. (Elise) Slack. Seven grandchildren: Cori Wroten, Andrea Boyles, Kaylen Adragna, Tory Marting, and Emma Marting. Five great grandchildren: Brayden, Jackson, Emerson, Karlyn, Ellary, Rachel Barabe and Casey Barabe.

He also is survived by a sister, four nephews, and a niece.

The family would like to give special recognition to Sean Marting for his caring, selfless devotion to our Dad.

"But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children." Ps 103:17

A Memorial Service will be held January 10th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou, Colorado Spring, CO.

Dr. Slack was my dentist when my parents and I first moved to security and then widefield in 1968. I was 16. He was such a nice man and always made me feel comfortable. After he retired, his son took over and became my dentist. Dr. Tom was always involved with widefield high school.

Tom, your father was my dentist from the time I was 9 years old until he retired. You have been my very caring dentist since then! What a wonderful, loving, caring legacy you share. I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. He was loved by all who knew him!

Dr. Slack was the first dentist I had seen in my life as a child in the 1960's. We lived in Security, Colorado at the time and, to this day, I remember his kindness. Such a sad loss to the community and the World.

Your dad was so special! He was the first dentist I ever went to (I was 7) and over the years he became more like an uncle. I get a laugh thinking about how he berated me after I chipped a tooth opening a bottle of vanilla flavoring. (Other such lectures occurred from time to time!) May you be blessed and comforted at this time; and may the stories you share about his life make you smile.

There are no words to express my love and sympathy for you all. Your family was such a huge part of my growing up years.
I spent a lot of hours with you all and your mom and dad were very special to me. I love you all and mourn with you. It is comforting to know he is back with your special mom now. May God hold you all close at this difficult time.

I hope you all know how incredibly loved you are by the McCuistion family. "Uncle" Tom had the biggest smile, warmest hug (next to my dad) and best laugh. I will forever appreciate and remember how loved I was by him. Hugs to you all!!
