Jeffrey Quinlan Obituary

Jeff Quinlan, 52, lost his courageous battle with cancer on September 29, 2010, at his home in Boulder, CO. Born July 1, 1958, in Wichita, KS to Leo and Norma Lee Quinlan, Jeff graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs in 1977 and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. Upon graduation from CU in 1982, Jeff moved back to Colorado Springs and joined his father in the insurance business and together they formed Quinlan Financial Group. He earned numerous awards over the years for outstanding achievements in insurance and financial planning. Jeff was a member of the El Paso Club in Colorado Springs and served on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Springs Symphony, Denver Athletic Club, The Children's Hospital Heart Advisory Board, and in 2007 he became a Board member for Swallow Hill Music Association. Jeff's passion for music and his desire to support, encourage and educate future musicians has evolved into a lasting relationship with Swallow Hill Music Association. His wish to leave his legacy to Swallow Hill is based on his belief in the transformative power of music to positively change people's lives. In addition to his love of playing guitar, his many other interests included travel, skiing, cycling, hiking, camping, and hikes with his beloved English Mastiff, Tonka. Jeff is survived by his mother, Norma Lee Quinlan; sister, Jan Quinlan-Jacobs and her husband, Dr. Jeff Jacobs; sister, Julie Quinlan; brother, Michael Quinlan; Aunt and Uncle Don and Joyce Hemme; Uncle Bob Hemme; nephew, Hunter Jacobs; and niece, Charlotte Lee Quinlan. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo E. Quinlan, and niece, Brigid Lee Quinlan. A private memorial service will be held in Colorado Springs at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to Swallow Hill Music Association at 71 East Yale Ave., Denver, CO 80210. www.swallowhillmusic.org.

I can´t believe it´s been 14 years that Jeff has been gone. Peggy Kraft and I still reminisce about him when we are together.

My heart is with your family as I just heard of this. I met Jeff in college. We skied together and I met him skiing as a friend of mine was on the ski team. He had a great, fun, charming personality. He played on his guitar of course Neil Young. But he sang it too which I loved. When he worked the summer of 1980, he wrote me a 2 page letter that I recently found in clearing out my family house. In it he talks about his family, how he misses his mom´s cooking, his friends, the pool, how the clubs his family belonged to had a lot of fun activities. He was turning 18 and said "Next Tuesday is my birthday, I thought I would never make it this far. I will be 18, now I can drink 3.2 beer, Hooray!" His humor and zest for life came out in his writing. He said " All I can think of anymore is home."

I was in Julie's class at Cheyenne Mountain High School and so didn't know Jeff well, but he recruited me to play piano on Boston's More Than A Feeling for the talent show his senior year, and I appreciated his love of music and his enthusiasm. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. He and the family are in my prayers.

Dear Norma Lee, Jan, Julie, and Mike. I will always remember the Thursday night Jeff came over to our house after the El Paso Club. We went out on the deck to visit and he completely opened up about his love for each member of your family. He told stories about each of you and we had a great time! Norma Lee, he thought of you as his rock. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Quinlan family, I am so sad to hear about Jeff. It has been a long time since our paths crossed, but I will always appreciate and feel fortunate that I had the chance to grow up with Jeff, and more importantly, to have experienced his kindness and friendship. My thoughts are with all of you.

Jeff, thanks for steering me towards a better brand of music. I was still digging The Archies and Strawberry Alarm Clock until you turned me on to Pete Townsend and Eric Clapton. I wonder if anyone ever found the spaceship we made in the attic over your garage? Rest in Peace.

Dear Quinlan family and friends.
Jeff is known as "the Q" to many of us who shared so many experiences with Jeff at the El-Paso club, his many social gatherings, his business events, and through the many friends he has made in his life. Being with Jeff was NEVER a dull moment. Always looking for the next adventure, 'a need for speed', an adrenalin junky like many of us. The plan was to live large, have fun, go fast, and make friends. We share many fond memories of full days at Vail and fine dining and entertainment at night. It was always, 'the best that $ could buy". You made life fun, entertaining, and full of adventure. You have lived more, seen more, and experienced more in your 52 years than most people live in several lifetimes. We celebrate your life while we grieve with your family and friends, for they are in our thoughts and prayers. We will miss you my friend.....

Jeff: You were an inspiration to me in the past 7 years since we met, and also to so many others. I loved to hear you play the guitar and sing (especially Neil Young). I miss your wonderful sense of humor and the sound of your laughter. Thank you for getting me on a heli-ski trip and up Vail pass on my bike. You brought fun to the simplest things.
The trip to the Mayo in 2007 was also memorable, but not as fun! ;-0

Thanks for your friendship and gusto for life. You are deeply missed, and will always be in my heart and thoughts.

My sympathy and prayers to Jeff's family and friends.

I met Jeff this last summer in the redwoods of California. We had some very deep and meaningful conversations regarding his cancer and how it was shaping his approach to living. It certainly gave us all food for thought.
The picture that is burned in my mind is that of Jeff sitting in front of me at a concert in a beautiful outdoor setting with a cigar in hand and a broad smile. He was seeing the magic of it all with appreciative eyes.

My husband and I were honored and blessed to have met and become close friends with Jeff several months ago. He quickly became a cherished and true friend, one we deeply cared about. We will miss him terribly; but we take comfort in knowing he is finally free from pain and in the light, knowing all truth.
Our deepest condolences to his family in this time of loss.

Jeff was like a brother to me. When I was a kid, he was the "cool" guy that everyone wanted to be like. He was so courageous in his fight and was an inspiration. My thoughts and prayers go out Norma Lee, Jan, Julie, and Mike. The Quinlan's have always been family to me and I know this loss is very hard. I will miss him terribly.
