Richard Powell Obituary

Richard "Dick" Edwin

Powell

January 2, 1932

May 27, 2021

Dick passed peacefully on May 27, 2021, surrounded by his family. Born January 2, 1932 in Chanute, Kansas, Dick grew up in Ottawa, KS. Following U.S. Army Korean War service, Dick earned his bachelor's degree from Ottawa University in 1958, and master's degree from Colorado College in Colorado Springs in 1968. After working his first jobs at the YMCA, followed by Admissions at Ottawa University and Colorado State University, his teaching, coaching, and administrative career spanned over 40 years starting at Lincoln Elementary School, moving on to Palmer High School, then was part of the opening staffs at Mitchell and Coronado High Schools. Dick accepted an executive position, with USA Volleyball, as the Director of USA Youth and Junior Olympic Development and then returned to education, retiring from Fountain Fort Carson High School, as an administrator. His dedication, commitment and presence impacted the lives of countless youth and colleagues.

At the forefront of Dick's life was his faith and his family: wife Joan, sons Rick (Melissa), Gary (Kathy), Randy, (Lori) and daughter Ashley. Retirement was filled with the joys, exploits and achievements of his grandchildren: Tyler (Joanne), Logan (Laura), Kipp (Lauren), Meghan, Ryne (Shelby), Miranda and Mallori.

Coupled with Dick and Joan's numerous foreign adventures, Dick particularly treasured time spent in Tucson and on Coronado Island in California. An avid reader, racquetball player, Rotarian and Bible Study participant, Dick led a fulfilled life. Being a former athlete and coach, Dick especially loved assisting the Broncos, Rockies, and KU basketball coaching staffs from the comfort of his recliner.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 11 at 2:30PM, First Presbyterian Church, 219 Bijou St., Colorado Springs, CO.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Dick's memory by either (1) donating food at the Marian House Soup Kitchen, 14 W. Bijou or sending cash donations online at CCCharities.org or mailing to 228 N. Dick was the AD at Coronado H.S. when I started my teaching career at Coronado H.S. I appreciated how Dick always put the student/athletes first and strived to do what was best for them. His sons were among my favorites during my tenure at Coronado. My condolences go out to the three of them, Rick, Gary, and Randy, along with his wife, Joan. May it be comforting to you to know Dick was a great person who was well respected.

I knew of Dick because my own father was part of the opening faculty of both Mitchell and Coronado High School. I also had the privilege of being daughter Ashley's 8th grade math teacher. In later years, I would see him as we shared workout time at the YMCA and as my wife and I left the Sunday service at First Presbyterian Church. He always kept me posted about Ashley and did so with great pride. Most significant in my memory of Dick will always be the way in which he would make others in his life feel important to him. My wife and I now live in the Denver area. We still attend First Pres online, but I will always remember those visits with Dick as we would leave church. Imagine if we could all treat an acquaintance as Dick did.

I’m so sorry for your entire family’s loss. My dad worked with Dick and Joan at Coronado and always had so much respect and admiration for them. Dick was a true icon in both the Coronado and education communities.

I knew Dick in several different roles over the course of his career. Dick was what we call a: straight shooter, He called each different situation as he saw it. He will be missed by many. Joan and Ashley are also strong individuals. I considered him a valued friend and mentor.

Joan and Family - Saddened to read of your loss. Dick was one of my favorites. Always enjoyed officiating a game while he was coaching. Also found pleasure just visiting with him off the court. He was always helpful when our paths crossed professionally. He was a gentle gentleman - that is the best way for me to describe him.
